Incamminandovi per il Colle Aventino, dopo il Giardino degli Aranci, troverete una delle incredibili sorprese di Roma: una piccola ma suggestiva vista che lascia senza fiato.

Guardando dalla serratura del portone di accesso alla Villa del Priorato di Malta si scorge la cupola di San Pietro, contornata dagli alberi che costeggiano il viale dei Giardini dell’Ordine. Una vista straordinaria godibile sia di giorno che di notte, con la cupola tutta illuminata.

Sapete, questa vasta area un tempo apparteneva a un monastero benedettino fortificato ma poi passò nelle mani dei Templari nel XII secolo. Non molto tempo dopo, nel 1312, l’ordine fu soppresso e gli edifici presenti furono affidati al Priorato dei Gerosolimitani.

Successivamente Clemente V affidò il monastero all’Ordine di Malta e ancora oggi è proprio qua che ha sede l’ambasciata dei Cavalieri di Malta in Italia.

Il nipote di papa Clemente XIII, il cardinale Rezzonico, volle far ristrutturare l’ingresso e affidò la commissione ne 1765 a Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
