Il mio San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo è stato uno dei sette diaconi di Roma e fu martirizzato il 10 agosto del 258, durante il periodo delle dure persecuzioni ordinate dall’imperatore Valeriano.
Io volli raffigurarlo nel Giudizio Universale, immediatamente sotto i piedi di Cristo Giudice e della Madonna. Siede sopra un panneggio verde adagiato su una nuvola mentre sorregge con spalla, braccio e mano sinistra la graticola sopra la quale lo arsero vivo.
Era cosa consueta all’epoca ma anche in tempi precedenti, raffigurare i martiri assieme agli strumenti con cui erano stati brutalmente uccisi: un modo per identificarli subito senza equivoci ma anche un modo per ricordare quali patimenti dovettero subire per aver mantenuto salda la loro fede in Dio.
San Lorenzo volge gli occhi verso l’alto e guarda Cristo mentre separa le anime salve da quelle dannate. Pare turbato come se fosse intimorito da quel braccio levato dal quale non ci sarà scampo per nessuno.

My San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo was one of the seven deacons of Rome and was martyred on 10 August 258, during the period of harsh persecutions ordered by the emperor Valerian.
I chose to depict it immediately under the feet of Christ the Judge and the Madonna. He sits on a green drapery lying on a cloud while holding the grill on which he burned it alive with his shoulder, arm and left hand.
It was usual at the time but also in earlier times, to depict the martyrs along with the instruments with which they had been brutally killed: a way to identify them immediately without equivocation but also a way to remember what sufferings they had to suffer for having kept their faith firm in God.
St. Lawrence turns his eyes upwards and looks at Christ as he separates the saved from the damned souls. He seems troubled as if he were intimidated by that raised arm from which there will be no escape for anyone.
