Oggi vi racconto una storia che mi riguarda da vicino che forse ancora non conoscere. Alla fine degli anni ’70 la Royal Academy ebbe grandissimi problemi finanziari e la direzione pensò di risolverli vendendo il Tondo Taddei. Un colpo di teatro che sembrava potesse andare in porto da un momento all’altro.

Il mio Tondo in quel momento era stato valutato 6 milioni di sterline ciè il doppio di qualsiasi altra opera che fino al momento era stata venduta all’asta. Con tutti quei danari sicuramente la Royal Academy avrebbe risollevato non poco le sue finanze e finalmene ci sarebbe stata la possibilità di ripagare il debito di 675mila Sterline alla Drummonds Bank ma per quanto avrebbe durato a tenere la testa alta quel museo dato che proprio il Tondo mio era ed è tutt’oggi la punta di diamante di tutta la collezione?

Nessun opera della Royal Academy poteva far guadagnare così tanto dalla sua vendita all’asta. Pensate che la seconda opera di maggior valore custodita era la pittura paesaggistica The Heaping Horse di Constable del 1852 che venne valutata 800mila Sterline.

L’istituzione già aveva cercato il sostegno del governo che però non aveva avuto. Nel febbraio del 1978 fu avvisata la Regina della possibile vendita dei beni posseduti. La questione fu molto dibattuta perchè se era vero che la vendita avrebbe risollevato le sorti del museo, gli inglesi consideravano il Tondo Taddei un patrimonio nazionale.

Pochi mesi dopo il segretario della Royal Academy, sidney Hutchison, scrisse una lettera confidenziale proprio alla Drummond Bank riferendo che se avesse fallito l’elargizione di fondi dalla parte della Regina, l’unica strada percorribile sarebbe stata la vendita dell’opera mia in questione.

Aleggiava anche nell’aria la possibilità di prestare il Tondo al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York non solo per ricevere denaro direttamente dall’istituzione ma per sensibilizzare eventuali donatori americani sulla questione della crisi della royal Academy. Fatto sta che il Tondo non raggiunse mai gli States nè fu portato al di fuori della nazione. Il motivo? i rischi di danneggiamento dell’opera erano e sono ancora oggi elevatissimi nel caso di sposatmenti perchè è attraversata da una fenditura sul retro non trascurabile.

Alla fine non venne effettuato nessun prestito nè vendita e il Tondo Taddei si trova ancora alla Royal Academy. Poco a poco l’istituzione risollevò il capo non senza numerose difficoltà e la malsana idea fu accantonata.

When Tondo Taddei risked being auctioned

Today I am going to tell you a story that concerns me closely, which I may not yet know. At the end of the 70s the Royal Academy had huge financial problems and the management decided to solve them by selling Tondo Taddei. A theatrical blow that seemed to go on from one moment to the next.

My Tondo at that time had been rated 6 million pounds there is twice as much as any other work that had been sold at the auction until now. With all those money, surely the Royal Academy would have raised its finances not a little and finally there would have been the possibility of repaying the 675mila debt to the Drummonds Bank but for how long it would have taken to keep that museum head held high since my own Tondo Was it and still is the spearhead of the whole collection?

No Royal Academy work could earn so much from its auction sale. Consider that the second most valuable work preserved was Constable’s 1852 landscape painting The Heaping Horse, which was valued at 800 thousand pounds.

The institution had already sought the support of the government which it had not had. In February 1978 the Queen was advised of the possible sale of the possessions owned. The question was much debated because if it was true that the sale would raise the fortunes of the museum, the English considered the Tondo Taddei a national heritage.

A few months later the secretary of the Royal Academy, sidney Hutchison, wrote a confidential letter to Drummond Bank reporting that if he failed to give money to the Queen, the only viable route would be the sale of my work in question .

There was also the possibility of lending the Tondo to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York not only to receive money directly from the institution but to raise awareness of any American donors on the issue of the crisis of the royal Academy. The fact is that the Tondo never reached the States nor was it taken outside the nation. The reason? the risks of damaging the work were and still are very high today in the case of adaptations because it is crossed by a non-negligible slit on the back.

In the end no loan or sale was made and Tondo Taddei is still in the Royal Academy. Little by little the institution raised its head not without numerous difficulties and the unhealthy idea was shelved.
