Le parti non restaurate
392 sono le figure che dipinsi nel Giudizio Universale e ciascuna di esse ha caratteristiche ben precise: non ce n’è una uguale all’altra né per postura né per aspetto. Ci sono giovani e vecchi, donne e uomini, demoni con volti che sembran caricature e oggetti come l’improbabile barca di Caronte e il suo remo, i simboli della Passione di Cristo e la ruota dentata di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria.
Sia nel Giudizio Universale che nella volta ci sono delle parti non restaurate, lasciate sporche così com’erano prima dell’ultimo intervento. L’avete mai fatto notato? Forse no. Sono degli spazi assai limitati a forma quasi sempre rettangolare nei quali i colori appaiono molto scuri e si fa fatica pure a vedere cosa c’è tracciato dentro.
Ebbene, quegli specchietti sono stati lasciati di proposito dai restauratori come testimonianza per i posteri… per far vedere quanto fosse scuro e quasi illeggibile l’aspetto dei miei affreschi nella Cappella Sistina. Se osservate con attenzione la volta e il Giudizio non vi sarà così difficile scovarli.
Ad esempio ce n’è uno sotto il trono di Giona e uno sulla veste gialla del personaggio presente nella Punizione di Aman ma ce ne sono molti altri.

The parts not restored
392 are the figures that I painted in the Last Judgment and each of them has very precise characteristics: there is not one equal to the other neither by posture nor by appearance. There are young and old men and women, demons with faces that look like caricatures and objects like the imposing boat of Charon and his oar, the symbols of the Passion of Christ and the toothed wheel of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Both in the Last Judgment and in the vault there are some parts not restored, left dirty as they were before the last intervention. Have you ever noticed? Maybe not. They are very limited spaces almost always rectangular in shape in which the colors appear very dark and it is hard to see what is traced inside.
Well, those mirrors were left deliberately by the restorers as a testimony to posterity … to show how dark and almost illegible the appearance of my frescoes in the Sistine Chapel was. If you look carefully at the vault and the Judgment it will not be so difficult to find them.
For example there is one under the throne of Jonah and one on the yellow robe of the character present in the Aman Pulse but there are many others.
