Lamentation about Christ
What you see here above is a drawing that I made between 1532 and 1534 with charcoal and “snguigna” a red colored pencil. Dead Christ is being held by the figures around him while His body is almost in a vertical position. There is a very tight bond between the Virgin Mother that has fainted with her Son in between her legs making me think of the many Madonna & Child’s that I’ve made in theh past.
Around Christ there are nine people that can be identified: some well-defined and others were quick schetchings. One can recognize the kneeling Magdalene on the left as well as Nicodemus or Giuseppe of Arimatea with his bearded face above Christ’s. Maria standing on the right barely touches the almost dead body.
This sheet belongs to the collections of Albertina in Vienna.
Yours truly, Michelangelo Buonarroti lost among all my drawings
