All’interno delle Cappelle Medicee, da qualche anno a questa parte, potete guardare a distanza ravvicinata il coronamento della lanterna che prima si trovava proprio sopra la cupola della Sagrestia Nuova della chiesa di famiglia dei Medici: la basilica di San Lorenzo.

Fu Papa Leone X Medici, nel 1520, ad affidarmi il progetto della Sagrestia Nuova che mi impegnò per parecchio tempo. Dopo il restauro architettonico della cupola diretto da Ludovica Nicolai, venne deciso di ricoverare il poliedro per evitare che si potesse rovinare ulteriormente sostituendo l’originale con una copia realizzata da Andrea Fedeli.

Il coronamento non è certo una delle opere mie più ammirate e conosciute ma sicuramente è degno di nota. Se avete avuto occasione di vederla da vicino vi sarete certo resi conto che è una creazione fuori dall’ordinario.

“Una palla a 72 facce” la denominò il Vasari. Si tratta di una figura assai complessa ma regolare arricchita alla base con le teste dei leoni e una corona d’alloro.

Fui io a progettare la palla sfaccettata ma a realizzarla materialmente fu il Piloto. Un personaggio assai strano, a tratti scomodo e affatto compreso.

Fino a quel momento, i coronamenti delle cupole venivano realizzati con delle sfere perfette a simboleggiare le rotondità del mondo sormontata da una croce. Quello che ideai io invece aveva e continua ad avere un aspetto assai insolito. E’ formato da differenti elementi e quello più particolare è sicuramente il globo sfaccettato.

In realtà sono due semi-sfere sfaccettate con triangoli, accoppiate, che sorreggono una croce assai pesante che poggia su un nodo finemente decorato.

Al di sotto del nodo c’è una lamina avente la forma di un tronco di cono decorato con otto fasce che terminano dietro altrettante teste di leone.

La sfera non ha 72 facce come scrisse erroneamente il Vasari ma 60. Chissà che s’era bevuto per aver fatto un conto del genere: secondo me ha tirato a indovinare senza contare!

Sebbene questo grandioso complesso della Sagrestia Nuova mi sia stato affidato da Papa Leone X, lo realizzai sotto un altro pontefice della famiglia Medici, salito sul trono di Pietro poco dopo: Clemente VII.

In una lettera che scrissi a questo papa nel gennaio del 1525 gli palesai chiaramente lo stato di avanzamento dei lavori:

“la lanterna qua della chapella di decto San Lorenzo, Stefano l’à finita di mecter su e schopertola, e piace universalmente a ognuno, e chosì farà a Vostra Santità. Facciàn fare la palla, che viene alta circha un braccio: e io ò pensato, per variarla dall’altre, di farla a faccie, che credo che arà gratia; e chosì si fa”.

The 60-sided ball of the New Sacristy

In the crypt of the Medici Chapels, for some years now, you can look at the crowning of the lantern that was previously right above the dome of the New Sacristy of the Medici family church: the basilica of San Lorenzo.

It was Pope Leo X Medici, in 1520, who entrusted me with the project of the New Sacristy which he committed to me for a long time. After the architectural restoration of the dome directed by Ludovica Nicolai, it was decided to hospitalize the polyhedron to prevent it from being further damaged by replacing the original with a copy made by Andrea Fedeli.

The crowning is certainly not one of my most admired and known works but it is certainly noteworthy. If you have had the opportunity to see it up close, you will certainly have realized that it is a creation out of the ordinary.

“A 72-sided ball” called Vasari. It is a very complex but regular figure enriched at the base with the heads of lions and a laurel wreath. I designed it but it was Piloto who made it materially. A very strange character, at times uncomfortable and completely understood.

Until now the crowns of the domes were made with perfect spheres to symbolize the roundness of the world surmounted by a cross. What I came up with instead had and continues to have a very unusual aspect. It is made up of different elements and the most particular is certainly the faceted globe.

In reality they are two faceted semi-spheres with paired triangles that support a very heavy cross that rests on a finely decorated knot. Below the knot there is a sheet having the shape of a truncated cone decorated with eight bands ending behind as many lion heads. The sphere does not have 72 faces as Vasari wrote erroneously but 60. Who knows who had been drinking to make a similar account: in my opinion he guessed without even counting!

Although this grandiose complex of the New Sacristy was entrusted to me by Pope Leo X, I built it under another pontiff of the Medici family, who ascended the throne of Peter shortly after: Clement VII. In a letter I wrote to this pope in January 1525, I clearly revealed the progress of the work:

“Stephen has finished putting up the lantern here in the chapel of San Lorenzo and showed it to everyone, I must say that everyone likes it and your Holiness will certainly like it too. I make the ball that will have a height of about an arm: I thought, to make it different from the other balls, to make it faces “.
