Se abitate a Firenze o ci siete capitati almeno una volta nelle vesti di visitatori attenti, non vi sarà sfuggita la presenza della mia dimora: Casa Buonarroti. A dire il vero oramai quella da secoli non è più casa mia, risiedo perennemente dentro la Chiesa di Santa Croce ma questa è un’altra storia.

Casa Buonarroti si trova al numero 70 di via Ghibellina, proprio all’angolo con via Buonarroti. In antichità via Michelangelo Buonarroti era nota col nome di via dei Marmi Sudici come ancora si può leggere su una targhetta apposta all’inizio della strada. Eh si, quei marmi sudici lì attendevano sempre che ci mettessi mano per cavarne fuori qualcosa di bello. Sempre preso in mille cose fra Firenze e Roma quei blocchi si sporcavano di polvere, fango e altra roba.

Torniamo però al filo del discorso. Mi conosco abbastanza per fermarmi in tempo prima di fare esagerate divagazioni sul tema.

Nella zona della città dove ora c’è casa mia, avevo acquistato nel lontano 1508 tre terreni nemmeno troppo grandi sui quali erano state edificate in tempo precedenti altrettante case più una molto piccola. Successivamente comprai un altro edificio attiguo: correva l’anno 1514. Le prime due case le affittai mentre nelle altre due che erano un po’ messe meglio, vi abitai fra il 1516 e il 1525.

Già a metà del 1525 quelle case lì erano tutte affittate: mica potevo lasciarle così, senza che mi fruttassero qualcosina, no?

Il mi nipote Lionardo, unico erede maschio, alla fine cedette alle mie pressioni e si sposò con una Ridolfi per darmi degna discendenza. Si impegnò anche a fare qualche piccolo lavoro di ristrutturazione ma poca roba: tanto alla fine anche i soldi serviti per recuperare qualche muro pericolante erano i miei!

Queste case arrivarono alla fine nelle mani di Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane, uno dei figli di Lionardo. Quella fu davvero una gran bella fortuna. Lui era un grande letterato, un uomo di teatro colto e di spiccata intelligenza. Non solo ampliò il fondo immobiliare ma proprio a lui si deve l’accorpamento degli stabili. Quelle casette divennero un palazzo e furono chiamati i più grandi artisti del tempo a decorarlo come l’Empoli, Artemisia Gentileschi, il Passignano ma anche Giovanni da San Giovanni, il Vignali e Franessco Furini.

Attualmente presso casa Buonarroti potete ammirare alcuni miei bozzetti ma anche opere giovanili molto importanti quali La Battaglia dei Centauri e La Madonna della Scala. Casa Buonarroti ospita poi la più grande collezione di miei disegni esistente anche se purtroppo, per ovvie ragioni conservative, non può essere esposta in maniera permanente.

Insomma, se vi capiterà di tornare a Firenze non dimenticate di passare da casa mia. Casa Buonarroti a Firenze vi aspetta con i suoi tesori e le sue tante meraviglie da scoprire poco a poco. Gustatevela con calma: la troppa fretta vi farebbe perdere il gusto di notare dettagli pregevoli.

Casa Buonarroti: everything you always wanted to know or almost

If you live in Florence or you have met us at least once in the guise of attentive visitors, you will not have missed the presence of my home: Casa Buonarroti. Actually now that for centuries is no longer my home, I live perennially inside the Church of Santa Croce but this is another story.

Casa Buonarroti is located at 70 Via Ghibellina, just at the corner with via Buonarroti. In antiquity, via Michelangelo Buonarroti, it was known as Via dei Marmi Sudici, as can still be read on a plate affixed at the beginning of the road. Oh yes, those filthy marbles always waited for us to take a hand to get something nice out of it. Always caught in a thousand things between Florence and Rome those blocks were dirty with dust, mud and other stuff.

But let’s get back to the thread of the speech. I know myself enough to stop in time before making exaggerated digressions on the subject.

In the area of ​​the city where there is now my house, I had bought in the distant 1508 three lands not too big on which they had been built in previous time as many houses and a very small one. Later I bought another building next door: the year was 1514. The first two houses I rented, while in the other two that were a bit better, I lived there between 1516 and 1525.

Already in the middle of 1525 those houses were all rented here: I could not leave them like that, without them yielding me a little something, right?

My nephew Lionardo, the only male heir, eventually gave in to my pressure and married a Ridolfi to give me worthy descendants. He also committed himself to doing some small renovation work but little stuff … so in the end even the money needed to recover some of the walls were unsafe!

These houses eventually came to the hands of Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, one of Lionardo’s sons. That was really a good luck. He was a great man of letters, a cultured man of theater and of strong intelligence. He not only expanded the real estate fund but he was responsible for the unification of the buildings. Those houses became a palace and were called the greatest artists of the time to decorate it as the Empoli, Artemisia Gentileschi, the Passignano but also Giovanni da San Giovanni, the Vignali and Franessco Furini.

Currently at the Buonarroti house you can admire some of my sketches but also very important early works such as La Battaglia dei Centauri and La Madonna della Scala. Casa Buonarroti then houses the largest collection of my existing drawings even if unfortunately, for obvious conservative reasons, it can not be permanently exposed.

In short, if you happen to return to Florence do not forget to go from my house. Casa Buonarroti in Florence awaits you with its treasures and its many wonders to be discovered little by little. Enjoy it calmly: too much haste will make you lose the taste of noticing fine details.
