..Onde l’affettuosa fantasia, Che l’arte mi fece idol e monarca, Conosco ben quant’ era d’error carca; Ch’ errore è ciò che l’uom quaggiù desia….
Il sempre vostro Michelangelo Buonarroti
David: the naked king
My David is naked: he wears nothing but a slingshot. Those who had grappled with the representation of the biblical hero before me, had always tried to cover it with some extra accessories. Even the David di Donatello, although almost completely undressed, has finely decorated shoes and a hat.
But the David told in the Old Testament, before facing the giant, had undressed. The trust in God was enough for him to defeat Goliath and a ready-to-use sling.

I did not deliberately put the head of the van, as did Verrocchio or Donatello. I wanted the audience to watch a different David before the deadly attack. Nude before the enemy and the world but armed with faith in God the Father.
Do not be illusions, however: the David as on the other hand a lot of my works and not, also has other meanings. He is the Florentine pride in front of tyranny, it is dignity, it represents the going to take liberty with bare hands in front of tyrants locked up in their armor but vile before the courage.
All this and much more is my marble colossus.
..Onde l’affettuosa fantasia, Che l’arte mi fece idol e monarca, Conosco ben quant’ era d’error carca; Ch’ errore è ciò che l’uom quaggiù desia….
Your always Michelangelo Buonarroti
