Sebastião Salgado a Bassano del Grappa: la prima grande retrospettiva italiana celebra il maestro della fotografia umanista
Dal 24 ottobre 2026 al 4 aprile 2027 il Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa dedica una straordinaria retrospettiva a Sebastião Salgado, uno dei più grandi fotografi del nostro tempo.
Attraverso oltre 160 immagini provenienti dalla collezione della Maison Européenne de la Photographie di Parigi, la mostra ripercorre cinquant’anni di carriera di un artista che ha saputo raccontare il dolore, la dignità e la bellezza del mondo come pochi altri.
Un omaggio a un maestro che ha cambiato il nostro modo di guardare il mondo
A un anno dalla scomparsa di Sebastião Salgado (1944-2025), Bassano del Grappa rende omaggio a una figura che ha segnato in modo indelebile la storia della fotografia contemporanea. Promossa dal Comune e dai Musei Civici di Bassano del Grappa, in collaborazione con la Maison Européenne de la Photographie di Parigi e Silvana Editoriale, l’esposizione rappresenta la prima mostra in Italia capace di raccontare integralmente l’opera del fotografo brasiliano.
Le sue immagini hanno attraversato guerre, crisi umanitarie, migrazioni, territori incontaminati e comunità dimenticate, trasformando la fotografia in uno strumento di testimonianza e consapevolezza. Ogni scatto di Salgado è diventato nel tempo una riflessione profonda sulla condizione umana e sul rapporto tra uomo e natura.
Oltre 160 fotografie per raccontare mezzo secolo di storia
Curata da Pascal Hoël, Responsabile delle Collezioni della Maison Européenne de la Photographie, la mostra si sviluppa attraverso una selezione di oltre 160 fotografie che ripercorrono le tappe fondamentali della carriera dell’artista.
Il percorso espositivo è suddiviso in due grandi sezioni. La prima accompagna il visitatore nei reportage che hanno reso celebre Salgado a livello internazionale, presentando immagini tratte da serie iconiche come “Other Americas”, “Sahel”, “Serra Pelada Gold Mine – Brazil”, “Workers”, “Kuwait”, “Exodus” e “Children of the Exodus”. Fotografie che documentano conflitti, povertà, migrazioni e condizioni di lavoro estreme, offrendo uno sguardo potente sulle contraddizioni del mondo contemporaneo.
La seconda parte è interamente dedicata a “Genesis”, il monumentale progetto realizzato in oltre sette anni di viaggi attraverso i luoghi più remoti del pianeta. Un’opera che celebra la natura incontaminata e invita a riflettere sulla necessità di preservare gli ecosistemi ancora intatti.
Dalla denuncia sociale alla rinascita ecologica
La forza della mostra risiede nella possibilità di osservare l’evoluzione artistica e umana di Salgado. Dai primi reportage sociali fino alla svolta ambientalista degli ultimi anni, emerge un percorso coerente in cui fotografia, etica e impegno civile si fondono in una narrazione unica.
Le immagini delle miniere d’oro di Serra Pelada, degli esodi di massa in Africa e Medio Oriente o dei lavoratori immortalati nei luoghi più duri del pianeta dialogano con le fotografie dedicate alle foreste amazzoniche, ai ghiacciai e alle popolazioni indigene. Il legame speciale con la Maison Européenne de la Photographie
La mostra nasce dalla storica collaborazione tra Sebastião Salgado e la Maison Européenne de la Photographie di Parigi, una delle più importanti istituzioni internazionali dedicate alla fotografia.
La MEP sostiene il lavoro dell’artista dagli anni Ottanta e ha costruito nel tempo una delle raccolte più significative delle sue opere. Un rapporto consolidato che ha raggiunto il suo apice nel 2018, quando Sebastião e Lélia Wanick Salgado hanno donato alla fondazione francese 105 fotografie, contribuendo ad arricchire ulteriormente il patrimonio dell’istituzione.
L’esposizione di Bassano rappresenta quindi anche il racconto di una collaborazione durata oltre quarant’anni e fondata su una comune visione del ruolo culturale e sociale della fotografia.

From October 24, 2026, to April 4, 2027, the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa is dedicating an extraordinary retrospective to Sebastião Salgado, one of the greatest photographers of our time. Through over 160 images from the collection of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the exhibition traces the fifty-year career of an artist who captured the pain, dignity, and beauty of the world like few others.
A tribute to a master who changed the way we see the world
One year after the passing of Sebastião Salgado (1944-2025), Bassano del Grappa pays tribute to a figure who has left an indelible mark on the history of contemporary photography. Promoted by the Municipality and the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa, in collaboration with the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and Silvana Editoriale, the exhibition is the first in Italy to fully showcase the Brazilian photographer’s work.
His images have spanned wars, humanitarian crises, migrations, pristine landscapes, and forgotten communities, transforming photography into a tool for testimony and awareness. Each of Salgado’s shots has become a profound reflection on the human condition and the relationship between humanity and nature.
Over 160 photographs tell a half-century of history
Curated by Pascal Hoël, Head of Collections at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, the exhibition unfolds through a selection of over 160 photographs that retrace the key stages of the artist’s career.
The exhibition is divided into two main sections. The first section takes visitors through the reportages that made Salgado internationally renowned, presenting images from iconic series such as “Other Americas,” “Sahel,” “Serra Pelada Gold Mine – Brazil,” “Workers,” “Kuwait,” “Exodus,” and “Children of the Exodus.” Photographs document conflict, poverty, migration, and extreme working conditions, offering a powerful glimpse into the contradictions of the contemporary world.
The second section is entirely dedicated to “Genesis,” the monumental project realized over seven years of travel to the planet’s most remote places. This work celebrates pristine nature and invites reflection on the need to preserve intact ecosystems.
From social commentary to ecological rebirth
The exhibition’s strength lies in the opportunity to observe Salgado’s artistic and human evolution. From his early social reportages to his environmentalist breakthrough in recent years, a coherent journey emerges in which photography, ethics, and civic engagement merge into a single narrative.

The exhibition is the result of the historic collaboration between Sebastião Salgado and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, one of the most important international institutions dedicated to photography.
The MEP has supported the artist’s work since the 1980s and has built one of the most significant collections of his work over time. A strong relationship that reached its peak in 2018, when Sebastião and Lélia Wanick Salgado donated 105 photographs to the French foundation, further enriching the institution’s collection.
The Bassano exhibition thus also represents the story of a collaboration spanning over forty years, founded on a shared vision of the cultural and social role of photography.
