Il Cellini del Cambi nella Loggia degli Uffizi
Tra le sculture degli uomini illustri collocate nella Loggia degli Uffizi, a cielo aperto, c’è anche quella di Benvenuto Cellini realizzata da Ulisse Cambi.
L’opera fu collocata lì assieme alle altre tre sculture del medesimo gruppo nel 1845 per l’ambizioso progetto mirato a rendere omaggio agli illustri toscani che resero grande Firenze, e non solo, nei secoli precedenti.
Il progetto complessivo vide la realizzazione e messa in posa di 28 opere in totale, compresa quella che raffigura me.
Come accennato prima, la scultura con l’effigie del Cellini venne inaugurata il 24 giugno del 1845, giorno di San Giovanni Battista. In un primo momento l’opera era stata affidata a Giovanni Insom ma quando propose alla Deputazione il modello in gesso, il progetto venne scartato a favore di quello ideato da Ulisse Cambi.
Collocata nella ventunesima nicchia, sulla parete esterna di quella che un tempo era la Zecca, fu messa lì perché, oltre a essere un eccellente scultore e fonditore, il Cellini fu anche un apprezzato disegnatore di coni.
L’opera fu molto apprezzata dai contemporanei di Cambi perché seppe ben rappresentare l’atteggiamento dell’artista, fiero, pieno di sé e spesso iracondo come raccontano le cronache della sua epoca.
Il cappello che stringe nella mano destra è un segno di riverenza verso Cosimo I de’ Medici al quale aveva proposto il modello del Perseo che oggi si trova nella Loggia dei Lanzi di Piazza della Signoria. In pratica l’artista mostra rispetto dinanzi al Granduca togliendosi dal capo i berretto.
Nella mano sinistra tiene proprio il modello del Perseo che purtroppo oggi rimane di difficile lettura, dopo il danneggiamento che subì oramai una ventina di anni fa.
La scultura è stata sottoposta a un attento intervento di restauro nel 2000, eseguito dalle restauratrici Paola Rosa e Maura Masini durante un cantiere che ha interessato tutte le opere del loggiato degli Uffizi, sostenuto economicamente dalla Starhotels.
In quell’occasione le opere vennero dotate di dissuasori per i volatili ma purtroppo, a causa della mancanza dell’attuazione integrale del piano di manutenzione, oggi le sculture della loggia si presentano ancora una volta cariche di depositi diffusi, incrementati anche dal cantiere in corso per i Nuovi Uffizi.

Cambi’s Cellini in the Uffizi Loggia
Among the sculptures of illustrious men located in the open-air Loggia degli Uffizi, there is also that of Benvenuto Cellini, created by Ulisse Cambi.
The work was placed there along with three other sculptures from the same group in 1845 as part of the ambitious project to pay homage to the illustrious Tuscans who made Florence, and beyond, great in previous centuries.
The overall project saw the creation and installation of 28 works in total, including the one depicting me.
As mentioned previously, the sculpture depicting Cellini was inaugurated on June 24, 1845, the feast of St. John the Baptist. The work was initially entrusted to Giovanni Insom, but when he proposed the plaster model to the Deputation, the project was discarded in favor of the one conceived by Ulisse Cambi.
Located in the twenty-first niche, on the exterior wall of what was once the Mint, it was placed there because, in addition to being an excellent sculptor and foundryman, Cellini was also a highly regarded coin designer.
The work was highly appreciated by Cambi’s contemporaries because it captured the artist’s attitude: proud, self-confident, and often irascible, as chronicles of his time recount.
The hat he holds in his right hand is a sign of reverence for Cosimo I de’ Medici, to whom he had presented the model of the Perseus, now housed in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Piazza della Signoria. In effect, the artist shows respect before the Grand Duke by removing his cap.
In his left hand, he holds the model of the Perseus, which unfortunately remains difficult to read today, after the damage it suffered some twenty years ago.
The sculpture underwent a careful restoration in 2000, carried out by restorers Paola Rosa and Maura Masini during a project that involved all the works in the Uffizi loggia, financially supported by Starhotels.
At that time, the works were equipped with bird deterrents, but unfortunately, due to the lack of full implementation of the maintenance plan, today the sculptures in the loggia are once again burdened by widespread debris, further increased by the ongoing construction of the New Uffizi.
