Fu grazie ai contatti che ero riuscito a instaurare a Roma mediante il banco Balducci-Galli nei miei primi anni romani che, tempo dopo, Alessandro e Giovanni Musucron, danarosi mercanti fiamminghi, mi vollero commissionare quella che oggi conoscete come Madonna di Bruges.

La commissione dell’opera mi fu affidata in concomitanza con altri lavori che stavo portando avanti come il Tondo Pitti, il Tondo Taddei, lo studio per la Battaglia di Cascina e finanche il Tondo Doni che oggi trovate esposto nella Galleria degli Uffizi.

Dai libri contabili di Baldassare e Giovanni Balducci, i due banchieri fiorentini con sede a Roma che ebbero modo di gestire sia le mie risorse economiche che quelle dei Musucron, si evincono due pagamenti separati effettuati a me da parte dei mecenati tra la fine del 1503 e il 1504.

Nel gennaio del 1506 scrissi al mi babbo in una lettera di far portare a casa l’opera scultorea senza mostrarla però a nessuno.

Desideravo mantenerla segreta fino a quando non fosse arrivata a destinazione. Non volevo fosse copiata da nessuno ma sembra anche ci fosse stata un’esplicita richiesta da parete degli stessi committenti di non mostrare ad alcuno quel lavoro prima della collocazione nella chiesa di Notre Dame de Bruges.

Arrivata a destinazione, l’opera fu collocata in un tabernacolo riccamente decorato. Oggi invece la potete ammirare tra i marmi neri del Belgio, posizionata tra l’allegoria della Fede e quella della Speranza.

Con il libro chiuso delle Sacre Scritture in mano, la Madonna come quasi sempre accade nelle mie opere, non guarda il Figlio ma volge lo sguardo verso il futuro che già conosce, percependo tutto il dolore e l’angoscia dell’atroce crocifissione.

The Bruges Madonna and the utmost confidentiality

It was thanks to the contacts I had established in Rome through the Balducci-Galli bank during my early years in Rome that later, Alessandro and Giovanni Musucron, wealthy Flemish merchants, commissioned what you now know as the Bruges Madonna.

The commission for this work coincided with other works I was carrying out, such as the Pitti Tondo, the Taddei Tondo, the study for the Battle of Cascina, and even the Doni Tondo, which is now on display in the Uffizi Gallery.

The account books of Baldassare and Giovanni Balducci, the two Florentine bankers based in Rome who managed both my financial resources and those of the Musucrons, show two separate payments made to me by the patrons between late 1503 and 1504.

In January 1506, I wrote to my father asking him to have the sculpture brought home, but not to show it to anyone. I wanted to keep it a secret until it reached its destination. I didn’t want anyone to copy it, but it seems there was also an explicit request from the patrons themselves not to show the work to anyone before it was placed in the church of Notre Dame in Bruges.

Once it arrived, the work was placed in a richly decorated tabernacle. Today, however, you can admire it among the black Belgian marbles, positioned between the allegories of Faith and Hope.

With the closed book of the Holy Scriptures in her hand, the Madonna, as almost always happens in my works, does not look at her Son but rather turns her gaze toward the future she already knows, feeling the pain of the atrocious crucifixion.
