Il dipinto del giorno che voglio proporvi oggi è il capolavoro realizzato da Filippino Lippi nel 1497 che narra l’Incontro di Gioacchino e Anna fuori dalla Porta Aurea di Gerusalemme.

Un dipinto a tempera su tavola custodito oggi al Museo Statale di Copenaghen che propone una scena della Legenda Aurea di Jacopo da Varazze, frate domenicano e vescovo di Genova, anche conosciuto come Jacopo da Voragine.

La Leggenda Aurea

Dopo che a Gioacchino e ad Anna era stata negata la possibilità di avere figli, a causa della loro età avanzata, entrambi pregarono ardentemente e si ritirarono in solitudine. A Gioacchino apparve un angelo che gli annunciò che sua moglie, Anna, avrebbe partorito una figlia che sarebbe stata benedetta da Dio. Anche ad Anna apparve un angelo con la medesima profezia. I due angeli dissero a Gioacchino e Anna di incontrarsi alla Porta Aurea di Gerusalemme per celebrare il loro futuro.

L’incontro tra i due abitualmente viene rappresentato con un bacio e un abbraccio, che simboleggiano il loro amore e la loro castità, e soprattutto il momento in cui fu concepito il Verbo, ovvero la Vergine Maria.

La Porta Aurea, uno degli ingressi più importanti a Gerusalemme, rappresenta, in questo caso, la porta d’ingresso per la salvezza. Per l’appunto, l’incontro tra Gioacchino e Anna non si svolge all’interno delle mura, ma all’esterno, a sottolineare che la grazia divina ha agito, superando ogni ostacolo.

Il dipinto del Filippino

Nel dipinto realizzato a fine Quattrocento dal Filippino, è evidente quanto sia stato grande l’interesse dell’artista per l’antichità classica. Osservate per esempio le colonne corinzie e quei rilievi che decorano la Porta Aurea di Gerusalemme.

Le costruzioni che si intravedono nello sfondo rievocano le atmosfere fiorentine che all’epoca veniva spesso definita proprio come la nuova Gerusalemme.

Al di sotto del davanzale della Porta Aurea, in oro, si legge la firma e la provenienza dell’artista PHILIPPINUS DE FLORENTIA.

Di questo capolavoro mi affascina in modo particolare la scelta dei colori dei tessuti così come la leggerezza delle figure dipinte, eteree ma che al contempo attraversano i secoli con una straordinaria potenza simbolica.

The Meeting of Joachim and Anna: A Masterpiece by Filippino Lippi

The painting of the day I want to feature is Filippino Lippi’s masterpiece from 1497, depicting the Meeting of Joachim and Anna outside the Golden Gate of Jerusalem.

A tempera on panel painting now housed at the State Museum of Copenhagen, it depicts a scene from Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend.

The Golden Legend

After Joachim and Anna were denied the possibility of having children due to their advanced age, they both prayed fervently and withdrew into solitude. An angel appeared to Joachim and announced that his wife, Anna, would bear a daughter who would be blessed by God. An angel also appeared to Anna with the same prophecy. The two angels told Joachim and Anna to meet at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem to celebrate their future.

The meeting between the two is usually depicted with a kiss and an embrace, symbolizing their love and chastity, and above all the moment when the Word, the Virgin Mary, was conceived.

The Golden Gate, one of the most important entrances to Jerusalem, represents, in this case, the gateway to salvation. Indeed, the meeting between Joachim and Anna does not take place within the walls, but outside, emphasizing that divine grace has acted, overcoming every obstacle.

Filippino’s painting

In the late 15th-century painting by Filippino, the artist’s profound interest in classical antiquity is evident. Observe, for example, the Corinthian columns and the reliefs decorating the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. The buildings visible in the background evoke the atmosphere of Florence, which at the time was often referred to as the New Jerusalem.

Below the sill of the Golden Gate, in gold, is the signature and provenance of the artist PHILIPPINUS DE FLORENTIA.

I particularly love the choice of fabric colors in this masterpiece, as well as the lightness of the painted figures, ethereal yet at the same time transcending the centuries with extraordinary symbolic power.
