Il disegno che vi propongo oggi lo realizzai attorno al 1545, quando già avevo compiuto settant’anni e raffigura la Madonna che abbraccia teneramente il Figlio.

Il Bimbo si volge verso di Lei baciandola teneramente. La Mamma Gli sostiene il capo, non a caso con la mano destra, considerata benevola ovvero appartenente a Dio.

Nei disegni che realizzai nell’ultimo periodo della mia vita relativi alla Madonna e al Bambino, collocai sempre il Figlio o tra le Sue gambe oppure seduto in grembo.

La Vergine, riccamente panneggiata, contrasta con il corpo del Figlio nudo, che già si prefigura come Redentore dei Peccati alla stregua dell’ostia consacrata. E’ come se la Madre chiesa tenesse in grembo il sacramento della Comunione, inteso per l’appunto come il corpo di Cristo.

Il disegno tracciato a carboncino nero, ritagliato e incollato sopra un altro foglio in epoca successiva alla mia, appartiene alla Royal Collection Trust di sua Maestà Re Carlo III.

The Madonna and Child from the Royal Collection Trust

The drawing I present to you today was created around 1545, when I was already seventy years old, and depicts the Madonna tenderly embracing her Son.

The Child turns toward her, kissing her tenderly. The Mother supports His head, not coincidentally with her right hand, considered benevolent or belonging to God.

In the drawings I made of the Madonna and Child in the last years of my life, I always placed the Child either between her legs or sitting on her lap.

The richly draped Virgin contrasts with the naked body of the Son, who is already prefigured as the Redeemer of Sins, like the consecrated host. It is as if Mother Church were holding the sacrament of Communion in her lap, understood precisely as the body of Christ.

The drawing, drawn in black charcoal, cut out, and pasted onto another sheet of paper after my own, belongs to the Royal Collection Trust of His Majesty King Charles III.
