Sono le 7.15 del mattino. Siena ancora sonnecchia mentre arriva sul sagrato del duomo di Santa Maria Assunta il clavigero.

Filippo Gamberucci, senese di nascita e di cuore, con il voluminoso mazzo di chiavi al seguito, dal 2022 ogni mattina apre le porte della cattedrale: da quelle di servizio fino al grande portone centrale in bronzo, dalla cancellata che consente di accedere alla Libreria Piccolomini agli accessi del sottotetto e delle terrazze. Con scrupolo e amore per il proprio mestiere, controlla che sia tutto a posto e accende le luci.

Il personale delle pulizie poco a poco fa ingresso nel duomo e inizia a lavorare prima che, alle 10, sia consentito l’accesso a fedeli e visitatori provenienti da tutto il mondo.

Nella Cattedrale e oltre la Porta del Cielo con il Clavigero

Tra un giro di chiave e l’altro racconta il suo mestiere e quello che conosce della cattedrale. Dopo diversi passaggi, con non poca fatica, apre le due pesanti ante in bronzo del portone progettato da Enrico Manfrini e, alle sue spalle, si vedono le superbe tarsie marmoree del pavimento.

Una suggestione difficile da dimenticare. 500 anni di storia raccontata con la tecnica del commesso fiorentino e del graffito da artisti che si sono succeduti nel corso dei secoli, si palesano alle prime luci dell’alba, ben prima che Gamberucci accenda quelle artificiali.

Il clavigero prosegue il suo lavoro arrivando ad aprire la Porta del Cielo che consente di arrivare alla sommità della fabbrica.

Al sottotetto si arriva percorrendo una stretta scala a chiocciola di pietra.

Si cammina agevolmente avendo la straordinaria occasione di affacciarsi sul duomo dalle varie aperture per osservare dall’alto l’Altare Piccolomini al quale contribuii con le mie quattro sculture, le volte stellate, gli affreschi, la vetrata di Duccio di Buoninsegna di fine Duecento con quei riflessi colorati che scaldano l’aria e il mirabile pavimento in cui sacro e profano si mescolano divenendo racconto unico e universale.

Solo in quel momento ci si rende conto del perché venga chiamata ‘Porta del Cielo’. Si viene condotti fin lassù da una scala che potrebbe essere benissimo quella apparsa in sogno a Giacobbe che svegliandosi disse: «Questa è proprio la casa di Dio, questa è la porta del cielo».

A ogni passo si scopre qualcosa di nuovo e inedito per la maggior parte delle persone, me compreso.

In un ambiente privo di decori ma con parti strutturali del tetto a vista, in qualche nicchia sono custoditi attrezzi usati in passato per la costruzione della cattedrale e una piccola marmoteca con le differenti tipologie di pietre presenti nella cattedrale.

Le terrazze offrono una vista impareggiabile su tutta Siena, ancora avvolta nel silenzio. Le luci del mattino accarezzano il profilo della Torre del Mangia, lambiscono la Chiesa di San Domenico e si posano sui tetti delle case.

Vero è che a tanta bellezza ci si abitua ma è altrettanto vero che il clavigero Gamerbucci è consapevole di quanto splendore sia attorniato quotidianamente: “Uno poi ci fa l’abitudine come in tutti i lavori però la bellezza è sempre la stessa. Per un senese nato a Siena come me è un orgoglio lavorare in una delle cattedrali più belle al mondo. E’ bello accompagnarla nel risveglio mattutino così come è emozionante essere l’ultimo a chiudere le porte e uscire”.

Il Giubileo 2025 della speranza e il percorso in duomo

In occasione del venticinquesimo Giubileo Ordinario della Chiesa cattolica, indetto da papa Francesco nel 2025, il cui messaggio centrale è la Speranza, dal 27 giugno al 31 luglio e dal 18 agosto al 15 ottobre, la Cattedrale di Siena rende fruibile le straordinarie tarsie marmoree del pavimento.

Sia i pellegrini che arrivano a Siena percorrendo la via Francigena che i visitatori, avranno l’opportunità di percorrere tarsia dopo tarsia, la virtù teologale della speranza che, come scrisse San Paolo ai Romani, Spes non confundit, la Speranza non delude.

Proprio in occasione dell’anno giubilare, è stata scoperta per la prima volta la tarsia della Speranza realizzata nel 1870 da Leopoldo Maccari, Giuseppe e Antonio Radichi su cartone di Alessandro Franchi. E’ una tarsia abitualmente coperta perché consente l’accesso alla Cappella del Voto, spazio sacro destinato al raccoglimento e alla preghiera.

Il clavigero del Duomo – Per primi in Cattedrale

Entrare in cattedrale in compagnia del clavigero è un’opportunità straordinaria ed è possibile farlo grazie all’iniziativa ‘Il clavigero del Duomo – Per primi in Cattedrale’.

Durante il primo periodo di scopertura del pavimento, dal martedì al venerdì, i visitatori potranno prenotare un tour esclusivo, con inizio alle ore 7.30 fino alle ore 8.45, seguendo l’apertura, l’accensione delle luci, l’organizzazione e la preparazione all’accoglienza insieme a coloro che quotidianamente si adoperano al risveglio della Cattedrale.

Con la luce naturale delle prime ore del mattino, il clavigero inizierà il suo lavoro in Duomo, nella Libreria Piccolomini e nel percorso elevato dei sottotetti del tempio con l’apertura della Porta del Cielo.

Per questioni logistiche e pratiche, le visite sono accessibili a poche persone per volta ed è indispensabile la prenotazione.

The Awakening of the Siena Cathedral: Discovering Beauty with the Clavigero

It is 7:15 in the morning. Siena is still dozing as the clavigero arrives in the churchyard of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

Filippo Gamberucci, Sienese by birth and heart, with his voluminous bunch of keys in tow, has been opening the doors of the cathedral every morning since 2022: from the service doors to the large central bronze door, from the gate that allows access to the Piccolomini Library to the entrances to the attic and terraces. With scrupulousness and love for his job, he checks that everything is in order and turns on the lights.

The cleaning staff gradually enters the cathedral and begins to work before, at 10, access is granted to the faithful and visitors from all over the world.

In the Cathedral and beyond the Gate of Heaven with the Clavigero

Between one turn of the key and another he talks about his job and what he knows about the cathedral. After several steps, with no small amount of effort, he opens the two heavy bronze doors of the door designed by Enrico Manfrini and, behind him, you can see the superb marble inlays of the floor.

A suggestion that is difficult to forget. 500 years of history told with the Florentine inlay and graffito technique by artists who have succeeded one another over the centuries, reveal themselves at the first light of dawn, well before Gamberucci turns on the artificial ones.

The claviger continues his work until he opens the Door of Heaven that allows you to reach the top of the factory.

The attic is reached by climbing a narrow stone spiral staircase. You walk easily having the extraordinary opportunity to look out over the cathedral from the various openings to observe from above the Piccolomini Altar to which I contributed with my four sculptures, the starry vaults, the frescoes, the stained glass window by Duccio di Buoninsegna from the late thirteenth century with those colored reflections that warm the air and the wonderful floor in which the sacred and the profane mix becoming a unique and universal story.

Only at that moment do you realize why it is called the ‘Gate of Heaven’. You are led up there by a ladder that could very well be the one that appeared in Jacob’s dream who, waking up, said: “This is truly the house of God, this is the gate of heaven”.

At every step you discover something new and unfamiliar to most people, including me. In an environment devoid of decorations but with exposed structural parts of the roof, in some niches are kept tools used in the past for the construction of the cathedral and a small marble library with the different types of stones present in the cathedral.

The terraces offer an unparalleled view of all of Siena, still shrouded in silence. The morning lights caress the profile of the Torre del Mangia, touch the Church of San Domenico and settle on the roofs of the houses.

It is true that one gets used to such beauty but it is equally true that the claviger Gamerbucci is aware of how much splendor he is surrounded by every day: “You get used to it as in all jobs but the beauty is always the same. For a Sienese born in Siena like me it is a source of pride to work in one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. It is beautiful to accompany it in the morning awakening just as it is exciting to be the last to close the doors and leave”.

The 2025 Jubilee of Hope and the Cathedral Route

On the occasion of the twenty-fifth Ordinary Jubilee of the Catholic Church, proclaimed by Pope Francis in 2025, whose central message is Hope, from June 27 to July 31 and from August 18 to October 15, the Cathedral of Siena will make the extraordinary marble inlays of the floor accessible.

Both pilgrims arriving in Siena along the Via Francigena and visitors will have the opportunity to walk inlay after inlay, the theological virtue of hope that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, Spes non confundit, Hope does not disappoint.

Precisely on the occasion of the Jubilee Year, the inlay of Hope made in 1870 by Leopoldo Maccari, Giuseppe and Antonio Radichi on a cartoon by Alessandro Franchi was discovered for the first time. With the natural light of the early hours of the morning, the clavigero will begin his work in the Duomo, in the Piccolomini Library and in the elevated path of the temple’s attics with the opening of the Porta del Cielo.
