A partire dalla metà di luglio avranno inizio i lavori di restauro del soffitto della Camera di Amore e Psiche di Palazzo Te.

Le prime parti a essere interessate dal progetto saranno le decorazioni pittoriche e lignee della volta e delle lunette.

L’intervento conservativo del soffitto della celebre camera affrescata da Giulio Romano durerà circa dieci settimane e sarà sostenuto economicamente dalla Fondazione Giulio e Giovanna Sacchetti Onlus, attiva nei progetti a favore del patrimonio storico, culturale e artistico.

La Camera di Amore e Psiche

La Camera di Amore e Psiche è l’ambiente più affascinante di Palazzo Te per la ricchezza e il pregio delle decorazioni: un vero e proprio capolavoro del manierismo. Il suo nome deriva da quello della Favola di Amore e Psiche, tratta dalle Metamorfosi di Apuleio.

La favola infatti viene raccontata sia sulla volta che nelle lunette e raggiunge l’apoteosi nel riquadro al centro del soffitto, dove Giove unisce in matrimonio Psiche e Amore.

L’ultimo restauro

Dopo l’ultimo restauro conservativo eseguito nei primi anni Novanta, il soffitto della Camera di Amore e Psiche presenta oggi un degrado fisiologico dovuto all’uso della sala e allo scorrere del tempo. Gli interventi in programma riguarderanno principalmente la complessa struttura della volta lignea, delle pellicole pittoriche e delle dorature.

Il lavoro, come sempre accade durante i restauri, sarà un momento per approfondire le ricerche su una delle opere più importanti di Giulio Romano.

“L’intervento di conservazione del soffitto della Camera di Amore e Psiche è un passaggio importante del programma del Cinquecentenario di Palazzo Te – dichiara il direttore Stefano Baia Curioni –, un progetto che unisce l’importante piano di conservazione programmata lanciato dalla Fondazione Palazzo Te e l’ampliamento del sistema di partenariati che il Cinquecentenario consente di perseguire. Ringraziamo di cuore tutti coloro che lo rendono possibile, a partire dalla Fondazione Giulio e Giovanna Sacchetti Onlus, per includere Diamara Parodi Delfino, e le istituzioni che hanno collaborato, il Comune di Mantova e la Soprintendenza Archeologica delle Belle Arti e del Paesaggio per le provincie di Cremona, Mantova e Lodi. Questo intervento privato a sostegno del bene pubblico è un elemento fondamentale dei modi in cui la cultura del nostro paese può essere rigenerata”.

Al termine dei lavori previsto nel mese di settembre, i visitatori di Palazzo Te potranno ammirare la magnificenza e la raffinatezza delle decorazioni che raccontano la storia d’amore tra Amore e Psiche, così come immaginate dal genio creativo di Giulio Romano.

Palazzo Te: the restoration of the ceiling of the Chamber of Cupid and Psyche begins

The restoration work on the ceiling of the Chamber of Cupid and Psyche of Palazzo Te will begin in mid-July.

The first parts to be affected by the project will be the painted and wooden decorations of the vault and the lunettes.

The conservation intervention on the ceiling of the famous room frescoed by Giulio Romano will last about ten weeks and will be supported financially by the Fondazione Giulio e Giovanna Sacchetti Onlus, active in projects in favor of historical, cultural and artistic heritage.

The Chamber of Cupid and Psyche

The Chamber of Cupid and Psyche is the most fascinating room in Palazzo Te for the richness and value of its decorations: a true masterpiece of Mannerism. Its name derives from the Fable of Cupid and Psyche, taken from Apuleius’ Metamorphoses.

The tale is in fact told both on the vault and in the lunettes and reaches its apotheosis in the panel in the center of the ceiling, where Jupiter unites Psyche and Cupid in marriage.

The latest restoration

After the last conservative restoration carried out in the early 1990s, the ceiling of the Chamber of Cupid and Psyche today shows physiological degradation due to the use of the room and the passage of time. The planned interventions will mainly concern the complex structure of the wooden vault, the pictorial films and the gilding.

The work, as always happens during restorations, will be an opportunity to deepen research on one of Giulio Romano’s most important works.

At the end of the work scheduled for September, visitors to Palazzo Te will be able to admire the magnificence and refinement of the decorations that tell the love story between Cupid and Psyche, as imagined by the creative genius of Giulio Romano.
