Il compito del Camerlengo in tempo di Sede Vacante
In questi giorni spesso si sente parlare della figura del Camerlengo: ma chi è questa figura e che compiti ha?
Il ruolo del Camerlengo
Il termine deriva dal latino camarlingus che vuol dire letteralmente ‘addetto alla camera del sovrano’. Il camerlengo diviene amministratore dello Stato della Città del Vaticano durante il periodo di interregno cioè durante la Sede Vacante, nel momento compreso tra il decesso di un pontefice e l’elezione del successore.
Sta scritto nell’articolo 335 del Codice di Diritto Canonico: ‘Mentre la Sede romana è vacante o totalmente impedita, non si modifichi nulla nel governo della Chiesa universale; si osservino invece le leggi speciali emanate per tali circostanze’.
Gestisce le funzioni ordinarie della Curia Romana ed è sempre a lui che spetta il compito di certificare la morte del Papa alla presenza del Decano del Collegio cardinalizio, del Maestro delle celebrazioni liturgiche, dei Prelati Chierici e del Segretario e Cancelliere della Camera Apostolica.
Si occupa di sigillare la camera e lo studio del pontefice e rompe l’anello del pescatore che sta a simboleggiare l’autorità papale.
Durate la Sede Vacante, lo stemma del camerlengo cambia. Mantiene sempre i trenta fiocchi rossi cardinalizi ma viene sormontato dal gonfalone papale con le chiavi pontificie posizionate sopra il cappello cardinalizio, noto anche con il nome di galero.
Il Camerlengo e il conclave
Durante la fase di Conclave, il Camerlengo ha il compito di assicurare la massima riservatezza delle operazioni di voto.
Con le nuove tecnologie che avanzano, deve assicurarsi anche dell’assenza degli smartphone all’interno della Cappella Sistina durante l’elezione del nuovo pontefice. Tutti i cardinali elettori hanno l’obbligo di consegnare o al camerlengo o a uno dei tre cardinali assistenti qualsiasi scritto abbiano con loro relativo all’esito di ogni scrutinio affinché vengano bruciati assieme alle schede
Il camerlengo a sua volta può essere eletto papa in fase di conclave ma è accaduto raramente nel corso della storia.
Il camerlengo nominato da papa Francesco
L’attuale Camerlengo che sta portando avanti l’amministrazione del Vaticano in questi giorni è il cardinale Kevin Joseph Farrell.Ha origini irlandesi e americane ed è nato 77 anni fa a Dublino. Venne ordinato sacerdote nel 1984 negli Usa, a Washington.
Fu proprio papa Francesco nel 2016 a volerlo a Roma per affidargli la direzione del nuovo Dicastero per i Laici, la Famiglia e la Vita, pilastro della riforma della Curia Romana. Appena arrivato nella Città Eterna, fu nominato cardinale e nel 2019 papa Francesco lo nominò Camerlengo.
Oggi verrà decisa la data in cui inizierà il conclave per eleggere il successore di papa Francesco che sarà compresa tra il 5 e il 10 maggio.

The role of the Camerlengo
The term derives from the Latin camarlingus which literally means ‘attendant to the sovereign’s chamber’. The camerlengo becomes administrator of the Vatican City State during the period of interregnum, that is, during the Sede Vacante, in the moment between the death of a pontiff and the election of his successor.
It is written in Article 335 of the Code of Canon Law: ‘While the Roman See is vacant or totally impeded, nothing shall be changed in the government of the universal Church; instead, the special laws issued for such circumstances shall be observed’.
He manages the ordinary functions of the Roman Curia and is always responsible for certifying the death of the Pope in the presence of the Dean of the College of Cardinals, the Master of Liturgical Celebrations, the Cleric Prelates and the Secretary and Chancellor of the Apostolic Camera.
He is responsible for sealing the room and the study of the pontiff and breaks the fisherman’s ring that symbolizes papal authority.
During the Sede Vacante, the coat of arms of the camerlengo changes. It always maintains the thirty red cardinal bows but is surmounted by the papal gonfalon with the papal keys positioned above the cardinal’s hat, also known as the galero.
The Camerlengo and the conclave
During the Conclave phase, the Camerlengo is responsible for ensuring maximum confidentiality of the voting operations.
With the new technologies that advance, he must also ensure the absence of smartphones inside the Sistine Chapel during the election of the new pontiff. All cardinal electors are required to hand over to the camerlengo or to one of the three assistant cardinals any written documents they have with them regarding the outcome of each ballot so that they can be burned together with the ballots.
The camerlengo in turn can be elected pope during the conclave but this has rarely happened in history.
The camerlengo appointed by Pope Francis
The current Camerlengo who is running the Vatican administration these days is Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell. He has Irish and American origins and was born 77 years ago in Dublin. He was ordained a priest in 1984 in the USA, in Washington.
