Simone Cantarini: un giovane maestro tra Pesaro, Bologna e Roma
La Galleria Nazionale delle Marche prosegue la celebrazione degli artisti marchigiani con la mostra ‘Simone Cantarini: un giovane maestro tra Pesaro, Bologna e Roma’ he aprirà i battenti al pubblico dal 22 maggio al 12 ottobre 2025.
Gli spazi di Palazzo Ducale di Urbino ospiteranno la mostra monografica dedicata a Simone Cantarini, artista nato nel 1612, curata da Luigi Gallo, Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari e Yuri Primarosa.
La mostra proporrà la modernità del pittore attraverso una selezione di 56 dipinti e sarà anche l’occasione per celebrare l’ingresso nelle collezioni di Palazzo Ducale, delle opere del Cantarini che presto si arricchirà di un ulteriore nucleo di sue opere in deposito.
Verso la metà degli anni trenta del Seicento, Cantarini si trasferì a Bologna per approfondire i suoi studi di pittura entrando direttamente nella bottega di Guido Reni.
Quando nel 1631 ci fu la Devoluzione del Ducato di Urbino alla Chiesa e giunse il legato papale Antonio Barberini junior, il giovane Simone fu chiamato a ritrarlo. Quei ritratti saranno in mostra e sapranno raccontare tutta la passione di quel giovane pittore, già molto considerato e inserito ai più alti livelli.
Guardando i capolavori giovanili dell’artista che saranno presenti in mostra, come la Sacra Famiglia con Santa Caterina da Siena, la pala coi santi Barbara e Terenzio, protettore di Pesaro, eseguita per la sua parrocchia o l’Immacolata oggi alla Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, sarà evidente il fatto che l’artista probabilmente già in quel momento della sua vita. avesse visitato Roma e conosciuto alcune delle opere più note della città eterna.
Non per niente la più importante fonte per Simone Cantarini, il bolognese Carlo Cesare Malvasia (1678), afferma che quando giunse alla scuola del Reni, attorno al 1635, era già un pittore fatto e formato, che si fingeva inesperto per poter carpire i segreti del grande maestro.
La rottura con Guido Reni
Alla rottura con Reni, avvenuta nel 1637, seguono anni difficili, che compresero soggiorni in patria e sicuramente un più lungo periodo a Roma, fino al trionfale ritorno a Bologna dopo la morte dell’odiato-amato maestro, sopraggiunta nel 1642, e l’avvio di un atelier di successo, gestito con una base anche a Pesaro.
Il risultato del soggiorno romano di questo periodo, tra 1640 e ’42 circa, affiora nelle opere di Simone soprattutto attraverso una nuova purezza neoraffaellesca e neoveneta, in linea con una corrente che avrà tra i capiscuola il Sassoferrato. Ma il suo sguardo sa adeguare queste novità alle nuove possibilità offerte dall’unione del classicismo bolognese con il naturalismo post-caravaggesco di artisti quali la fronda dei francesi a Roma, capeggiata da Simone Vouet, o di figure talora aderenti allo stile di Simone, come Pier Francesco Mola.
Il rientro a Bologna
Il rientro a Bologna portò Cantarini a elaborare un suo personale lingueggio figurativo, con una cifra stilistica di nuova grazia e dolcezza che nutrirà, dopo la sua precoce morte, nel 1648, tutto il secondo Seicento centro-italiano.

The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche continues the celebration of artists from the Marche with the exhibition ‘Simone Cantarini: a young master between Pesaro, Bologna and Rome’ which will open its doors to the public from 22 May to 12 October 2025.
The spaces of Palazzo Ducale in Urbino will host the monographic exhibition dedicated to Simone Cantarini, an artist born in 1612, curated by Luigi Gallo, Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari and Yuri Primarosa.
The exhibition will propose the modernity of the painter through a selection of 56 paintings and will also be an opportunity to celebrate the entry into the collections of Palazzo Ducale of Cantarini’s works, which will soon be enriched with a further group of his works in storage.
Towards the mid-1630s, Cantarini moved to Bologna to further his studies of painting by entering directly into Guido Reni’s workshop.
When in 1631 the Duchy of Urbino was devolved to the Church and the papal legate Antonio Barberini junior arrived, the young Simone was called to portray him. Those portraits will be on display and will be able to tell all the passion of that young painter, already highly regarded and included at the highest levels.
Looking at the artist’s youthful masterpieces that will be present in the exhibition, such as the Holy Family with Saint Catherine of Siena, the altarpiece with Saints Barbara and Terenzio, protector of Pesaro, painted for his parish or the Immaculate Conception today at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna, it will be clear that the artist probably already at that moment of his life had visited Rome and known some of the most famous works of the eternal city.
It is no coincidence that the most important source for Simone Cantarini, the Bolognese Carlo Cesare Malvasia (1678), states that when he arrived at Reni’s school, around 1635, he was already a fully-fledged painter, who pretended to be inexperienced in order to steal the secrets of the great master.
The break with Guido Reni
The break with Reni, which occurred in 1637, was followed by difficult years, which included stays in his homeland and certainly a longer period in Rome, until the triumphant return to Bologna after the death of the hated-beloved master, which occurred in 1642, and the opening of a successful atelier, also managed with a base in Pesaro.
The result of the Roman stay of this period, between 1640 and ’42 approximately, emerges in Simone’s works above all through a new neo-Raphaelesque and neo-Venetian purity, in line with a movement that will have Sassoferrato among its leaders. But his gaze knows how to adapt these innovations to the new possibilities offered by the union of Bolognese classicism with the post-Caravaggio naturalism of artists such as the French rebellion in Rome, led by Simone Vouet, or of figures sometimes adhering to Simone’s style, such as Pier Francesco Mola.
The return to BolognaThe return to Bologna led Cantarini to develop his own personal figurative language, with a stylistic figure of new grace and sweetness that would nourish, after his premature death, in 1648, the entire second half of the Central Italian seventeenth century.
