Studi ottocenteschi sul David
Le opere mie sono state studiate a lungo da un gran numero di artisti sia del passato che del presente.
Il pittore inglese George Richmond, padre del più noto pittore William Blake Richmond e nonno del celebre ammiraglio Sir Herbert Richmond, ebbe modo di viaggiare in Italia per due anni, tra il 1837 e il 1839.
Durante questo periodo vide il mio David in Piazza della Signoria a Firenze e si sedette dinanzi a lui, per studiarlo a fondo.
Prese carta penna per tracciare ciò che stava osservando: la figura del David vista di fronte e i piedi. Dei piedi tanto si invaghì che ne realizzò diversi schizzi a penna sullo stesso foglio.
Della figura intera del David ne realizzò invece uno schizzo a figura intera a penna e due a grafite che si intravedono sotto i disegni dei piedi.
Come accennato prima, Richmond realizzò questi studi tra il 1837 e il 1839, durante il suo passaggio a Firenze.
Il foglio appartiene alle collezioni del British Museum.

Nineteenth-century studies on David
My works have been studied at length by a great number of artists, both past and present.
The painter George Richmond, father of the more famous painter William Blake Richmond and grandfather of the famous Admiral Sir Herbert Richmond, had the opportunity to travel in Italy for two years, between 1837 and 1839.
During this period he saw my David in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence and sat down in front of it, to study it in depth.
He took pen and paper to trace what he was observing: the figure of David seen from the front and the feet. He was so infatuated with the feet that he made several pen sketches on the same sheet of paper.
Of the entire figure of David he instead made a full-length pen sketch and two graphite sketches that can be glimpsed under the drawings of the feet.
As mentioned above, Richmond made these studies between 1837 and 1839, during his stay in Florence.
The sheet belongs to the collections of the British Museum.
