Un numero straordinario di dipinti autografi, prestiti dalle più prestigiose istituzioni museali del mondo, nuove scoperte e due capolavori riscoperti per la prima volta esposti in confronto ad altre opere del Merisi: ecco quello che troveremo nel percorso espositivo della mostra ‘Caravaggio 2025’.

In occasione del Giubileo, le Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica di Roma presentano la mostra CARAVAGGIO 2025, a cura di Francesca Cappelletti, Maria Cristina Terzaghi e Thomas Clement Salomon dal 7 marzo al 6 luglio 2025.

L’esposizione racconterà la forza innovatrice che Caravaggio introdusse nel panorama artistico, religioso e sociale del suo tempo.

Si tratta di uno dei più importanti e ambiziosi progetti espositivi mai dedicati all’opera del Merisi che per la prima volta riporta, in un luogo simbolo della connessione tra Caravaggio e i suoi mecenati, una accanto all’altra, opere dalla storia comune, provenienti da importanti collezioni nazionali e internazionali.

Esaminando il contesto che ha reso l’artista una figura centrale nell’arte mondiale, Palazzo Barberini, ospiterà le opere in un allestimento che esalta la potenza e la modernità della pittura di Caravaggio, tra i più grandi maestri della pittura di tutti i tempi.

Riunendo alcune delle opere più celebri, affiancate da altre meno note ma altrettanto significative, la mostra vuole offrire una nuova e approfondita riflessione sulla rivoluzione artistica e culturale dell’artista, esplorando per la prima volta in un contesto così ampio l’innovazione che introdusse nel panorama artistico, religioso e sociale del suo tempo.

Tra le opere in esposizione il Ritratto di Maffeo Barberini recentemente presentato al pubblico a oltre sessant’anni dalla sua riscoperta, ora per la prima volta affiancato ad altri dipinti del Merisi, e l’Ecce Homo, attualmente esposto al Museo del Prado di Madrid che rientrerà in Italia per la prima volta dopo secoli, accanto ad altri prestiti eccezionali come la Santa Caterina del Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza di Madrid, capolavoro già nelle collezioni Barberini che tornerà nel Palazzo che la ospitava, e Marta e Maddalena del Detroit Institute of Arts, per il quale l’artista ha usato la stessa modella della Giuditta conservata a Palazzo Barberini, esposti per la prima volta tutti uno accanto all’altro.

La mostra sarà anche l’occasione per vedere di nuovo insieme i tre dipinti commissionati dal banchiere Ottavio Costa: Giuditta e Oloferne di Palazzo Barberini, il San Giovanni Battista del Nelson-Atkins Museum di Kansas City e il San Francesco in estasi del Wadsworth Atheneum of Art di Hartford, e opere legate alla storia del collezionismo dei Barberini, come i Bari del Kimbell Art Museum di Fort Worth, che torna nel palazzo romano dove fu a lungo conservato.

Chiude la selezione l’importante prestito concesso da Intesa Sanpaolo: Martirio di sant’Orsola, ultimo dipinto del Merisi, realizzato poco prima della sua morte.

Caravaggio 2025: the ambitious exhibition dedicated to Merisi in Rome

An extraordinary number of autographed paintings, loans from the most prestigious museum institutions in the world, new discoveries and two rediscovered masterpieces exhibited for the first time in comparison with other works by Merisi: this is what we will find in the exhibition itinerary of the exhibition ‘Caravaggio 2025’.

On the occasion of the Jubilee, the National Galleries of Ancient Art in Rome present the exhibition CARAVAGGIO 2025, curated by Francesca Cappelletti, Maria Cristina Terzaghi and Thomas Clement Salomon from 7 March to 6 July 2025.

The exhibition will tell the innovative force that Caravaggio introduced into the artistic, religious and social panorama of his time. This is one of the most important and ambitious exhibition projects ever dedicated to the work of Merisi, which for the first time brings together, in a place that is a symbol of the connection between Caravaggio and his patrons, works with a common history, coming from important national and international collections.

Examining the context that made the artist a central figure in world art, Palazzo Barberini will host the works in a setting that enhances the power and modernity of Caravaggio’s painting, one of the greatest masters of painting of all time.

Bringing together some of the most famous works, alongside other lesser-known but equally significant ones, the exhibition aims to offer a new and in-depth reflection on the artist’s artistic and cultural revolution, exploring for the first time in such a broad context the innovation he introduced into the artistic, religious and social panorama of his time.

Among the works on display are the Portrait of Maffeo Barberini, recently presented to the public over sixty years after its rediscovery, now for the first time alongside other paintings by Merisi, and the Ecce Homo, currently exhibited at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, which will return to Italy for the first time in centuries, alongside other exceptional loans such as the Saint Catherine from the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, a masterpiece already in the Barberini collections that will return to the Palace that hosted it, and Marta and Maddalena from the Detroit Institute of Arts, for which the artist used the same model as the Judith preserved in Palazzo Barberini, exhibited for the first time all side by side.

The exhibition will also be an opportunity to see together again the three paintings commissioned by the banker Ottavio Costa: Judith and Holofernes from Palazzo Barberini, the Saint John the Baptist from the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City and the Saint Francis in Ecstasy from the Wadsworth Atheneum of Art in Hartford, and works linked to the history of Barberini collecting, such as the Cardsharps from the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, which returns to the Roman palace where it was long kept.

The selection closes with the important loan granted by Intesa Sanpaolo: Martyrdom of Saint Ursula, Merisi’s last painting, made shortly before his death.
