Da oggi 14 gennaio, apre al Museo dell’Opificio delle Pietre dure di Firenze la mostra dedicata al restauro eseguito su un dipinto a tempera a uovo su carta, realizzato come modello per realizzare in un secondo momento un capolavoro in commesso fiorentino.

L’esposizione fa parte dell’interessante rassegna ‘Caring for Art. Restauri in mostra‘, promossa dall’Opificio per raccontare al grande pubblico il lavoro che viene fatto degli undici settori di restauro dell’Istituto fiorentino.

‘Dalla carta alla pietra. Il modello per il Vaso di fiori di Edoardo Marchionni‘, è il titolo della mostra dedicata al certosino intervento eseguito sul dipinto su carta ,raffigurante un vaso con fiori eseguito a tempera a uovo negli anni Settanta dell’Ottocento da Edoardo Marchionni, all’epoca direttore dell’Opificio.

La storia del dipinto e del pannello in commesso fiorentino

Il dipinto non era stato mai esposto precedentemente e costituiva il modello in scala 1:1 per un pannello in pietre dure che fu allora realizzato con la tecnica del commesso dagli abilissimi artefici dell’Opificio per l’Esposizione universale di Parigi del 1878.

Il pannello purtroppo rimase invenduto perchè non ci fu nessuno disposto a spendere l’elevata cifra alla quale era stato messo in vendita. Il lavoro paziente che richiede il commesso fiorentino, la preziosità dei materiali adoperati e la qualità complessiva dell’opera, avevano portato il prezzo di vendita a una cifra da capogiro.

Per tale ragione ancora oggi quel lavoro è rimasto all’Opificio e da anni è esposto in modo permanente nel museo fiorentino.

Il restauro del dipinto su carta

Il modello in carta realizzato a tempera all’uovo su carta da spolvero è stato rinvenuto e identificato negli archivi dell’Opificio in condizioni critiche. Era infatti stato ripiegato all’interno di una cartella assieme ad altri progetti e sia il supporto in carta che la fragile pellicola pittorico si erano degradati.

Il restauro è stato molto complesso ed è stato avviato nel 2023, nell’ambito di una tesi di laurea della Scuola di Alta Formazione e Studio dell’OPD.

Il dipinto, dopo il restauro, ha riacquisito l’integrità del supporto cartaceo. Sono stati infatti ricostruite le mancanze e sono state consolidate accuratamente le parti originali mediante un nuovo prodotto sviluppato con le nanotecnologie dal Dipartimento di Chimica dell’Università di Firenze.

In questo modo si è risolto il problema più gravoso: il progressivo distacco della pellicola pittorica.

I restauro ha consentito di ritrovare anche altri disegni funzionali per la realizzazione del prezioso panenllo in commesso fiorentino.

From Paper to Stone: History and Restoration of the Vase of Flowers

From today, January 14, the exhibition dedicated to the restoration carried out on an egg tempera painting on paper created as a model to later create a work in Florentine mosaic opens at the Museum of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.

The exhibition is part of the interesting exhibition ‘Caring for Art. Restorations on display‘, promoted by the Opificio to tell the general public about the work being done in the eleven restoration sectors of the Florentine Institute.

‘From paper to stone. The model for the Vase of Flowers by Edoardo Marchionni‘, is the title of the exhibition dedicated to the painstaking intervention carried out on the painting on paper, depicting a vase with flowers made in egg tempera in the 1870s by Edoardo Marchionni, director of the Opificio at the time.

The history of the painting and the panel in Florentine inlay

The painting had never been exhibited before and was a 1:1 scale model for a panel in semiprecious stones that was then created with the inlay technique by the highly skilled craftsmen of the Opificio for the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878.

Unfortunately, the panel remained unsold because there was no one willing to spend the high price at which it was put up for sale. The patient work that Florentine inlay requires, the preciousness of the materials used and the overall quality of the work had brought the selling price to a dizzying figure.

For this reason, that work has remained at the Opificio even today and has been permanently exhibited in the Florentine museum for years.

The restoration of the painting on paper

The paper model created with egg tempera on dusting paper was found and identified in the archives of the Opificio in critical conditions. It had in fact been folded inside a folder together with other projects and both the paper support and the fragile pictorial film had degraded.

The restoration was very complex and was started in 2023, as part of a degree thesis of the OPD School of Advanced Training and Study.

After the restoration, the painting regained the integrity of the paper support. In fact, the gaps were reconstructed and the original parts were carefully consolidated using a new product developed with nanotechnology by the Department of Chemistry of the University of Florence.

In this way, the most serious problem was solved: the progressive detachment of the pictorial film.

The restoration also made it possible to find other functional drawings for the creation of the precious Florentine mosaic panel.
