Sarà la Repubblica di San Marino a coniare la moneta celebrativa da due euro per ricordare i 550 anni dalla mia nascita.

Venni al mondo in quel di Caprese il 6 marzo del 1475. Di quel momento scrisse il Vasari nella seconda edizione delle Vite: “Nacque dunque un figliuolo sotto fatale e felice stella nel Casentino, di onesta e nobile donna, l‘anno 1474 (anno fiorentino) a Lodovico di Lionardo Buonarruoti Simoni, disceso, secondo che si dice, della nobilissima et antichissima famiglia de’ Conti di Canossa“.

Io però con i Conti di Canossa non ebbi nulla a che fare sebbene mi piacesse crederlo ma questa è un’altra storia che già vi narrai a suo tempo QUA.

Ancora non è stata resa nota la tiratura della moneta ma già si conoscono recto e verso.

Il recto riprodurrà Cleopatra, una delle mirabili teste divine che regalai al mio amatissimo Tommaso de’ Cavalieri. La tenne con se per trent’anni fino a quando non fu costretto a cederla al duca Cosimo I de’ Medici. Era il 1562 e ancora non ero passato a miglior vita. Mai avrebbe ceduto quel disegno se non fosse stato letteralmente obbligato

Tommaso inviò la Testa di Cleopatra a Firenze assieme a una dolorosa lettera nella quale volle ribadire che, privarsi della Cleopatra che gli avevo donato, equivaleva alla straziante perdita di un figlio. 

Orbene, ora quel preziosissimo presentation drawing sarà coniato sulla moneta da due euro. Sul verso invece sarà ricordato il Giubileo 2025 da poco aperto da papa Francesco.

The 2 euro coin dedicated to the 550th anniversary of my birth

The Republic of San Marino will mint the commemorative two euro coin to commemorate the 550th anniversary of my birth.

I came into the world in Caprese on March 6, 1475. The mintage of the coin has not yet been made known but the front and back are already known.

The front will feature Cleopatra, one of the wonderful divine heads that I gave to my beloved Tommaso de’ Cavalieri. He kept it with him for thirty years until he was forced to give it to Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici. It was 1562 and I had not yet passed away. He would never have given up that drawing if he had not been literally forced.

Tommaso sent the Head of Cleopatra to Florence along with a painful letter in which he wanted to reiterate that, depriving himself of the Cleopatra that I had given him, was equivalent to the heartbreaking loss of a son.

Well, now that precious presentation drawing will be minted on the two-euro coin. On the back, the Jubilee 2025 recently opened by Pope Francis will be remembered.
