L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è il dipinto della Natività realizzato dal preraffaellita Edward Burne-Jones nel 1888.

L’incredibile storia della Natività di Burne-Jones

L’opera fu commissionata all’artista per arricchire il coro della chiesa di San Giovanni Apostolo di Torquay, in Inghilterra, assieme a un altro suo dipinto di grandi dimensioni dal titolo ‘Il Re pastore’.

La chiesa era stata progettata quasi vent’anni prima dall’architetto George Edmund Street ma, alla fine degli anni Ottanta del Novecento, ci fu la necessità di realizzare un nuovo tetto.

Per trovare i soldi necessari, furono vendute entrambi i dipinti di Burne-Jones nel 1989 e al loro posto vennero posizionate delle copie. Fu il compositore Andrew Lloyd Webber a comprarli ma nel 1997volle donarli al Carnegie Museum of Art di Pittsburgh, negli Stati Uniti.

Scelse questo museo perché proprio in quella città aveva debuttato nel 1971 il suo musical di successo mondiale Jesus Christ Superstar.

Le caratteristiche della Nativitià di Burne-Jones

Burne-Jones dipinse Maria sdraiata sopra una grande mangiatoia e tra Lei e la paglia, interpose un grande lenzuolo bianco. Maria, con una posa protettiva, stringe il Bambino a sé, avvicinando il Suo volto a quello del Salvatore.

A sinistra il gruppo di tre angeli richiamano il momento della Passione, tenendo con le mani la corona di spine, un calice e un recipiente contenente la mirra.

Nella parte più alta si legge un’iscrizione in latino tratta dal Salterio Gallicano ed è il Salmo 11, versetto 6: PROPTER MISERIAM INOPUM ET GEMITUM PAUPERIS NUNC EXSURGAM DICIT DOMINUS ovvero “A causa della miseria dei poveri e del gemito dei bisognosi, ora mi alzerò, dice il Signore”.

San Giuseppe invece è girato di spalle, avvolto nel mantello marrone e posto ai piedi della Vergine. Tiene in mano un libro dal quale sta leggendo forse il Salmo che Burne-Jones dipinse poco sopra.

Christmas works: the Nativity by the Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones

The Christmas work I propose to you today is the painting of the Nativity made by the Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones in 1888.

The incredible story of the Nativity by Burne-Jones

The work was commissioned to the artist to enrich the choir of the church of St. John the Apostle in Torquay, England, together with another of his large paintings entitled ‘The Shepherd King’.

The church had been designed almost twenty years earlier by the architect George Edmund Street but, in the late 1980s, it became necessary to build a new roof.

To raise the necessary money, both paintings by Burne-Jones were sold in 1989 and copies were placed in their place. It was the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber who bought them but in 1997 he wanted to donate them to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, in the United States.

He chose this museum because it was in that city that his worldwide hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar debuted in 1971.

The characteristics of Burne-Jones’ Nativity

Burne-Jones painted Mary lying on a large manger and between Her and the straw, he placed a large white sheet. Mary, in a protective pose, holds the Child close to her, bringing Her face close to that of the Savior.

On the left, the group of three angels recall the moment of the Passion, holding in their hands the crown of thorns, a chalice and a container containing myrrh.

In the highest part, there is a Latin inscription taken from the Gallican Psalter and it is Psalm 11, verse 6: PROPTER MISERIAM INOPUM ET GEMITUM PAUPERIS NUNC EXSURGAM DICIT DOMINUS or “Because of the misery of the poor and the groaning of the needy, now I will arise, says the Lord”.

Saint Joseph instead is turned from behind, wrapped in his brown cloak and placed at the feet of the Virgin. He is holding a book from which he is perhaps reading the Psalm that Burne-Jones painted just above.
