Oggi 3 ottobre apre al pubblico la mostra a Castel Sant’Angelo allestita nelle Sale dell’Armeria Superiore che racconta la connessione tra Roma, la città dei papi, e l’ambiente artistico e culturale delle Marche: ‘Papi e Santi marchigiani a Castel Sant’Angelo’.

Le Marche nel corso dei secoli hanno avuto modo di stringere un profondo legame con la Chiesa cattolica e con Roma. Basta sfogliare indietro le pagine della storia per rendersi conto che questa regione è stata connessa per secoli con lo Stato Pontificio che ha contribuito a plasmare l’identità e il tessuto sociale della regione.

Senza dubbio l’influenza che ha avuto la Chiesa con il suo potere sulle Marche ha modificato tanti aspetti della società marchigiana, ispirando sì capolavori artistici ma guidando al contempo le istituzioni e le pratiche religiose della popolazione.

Le marche di fatto sono un crocevia di storia e fede. Il suo patrimonio artistico e architettonico fa parte del tessuto della vita quotidiana e mette assieme cultura e spiritualità.

Ma non solo. I numerosi Santi marchigiani sono divenuti un punto cardine sia religioso che artistico. Basti pensare a San Nicola da Tolentino, giusto per fare un esempio celebre.

“La mostra ‘Papi e Santi marchigiani a Castel Sant’Angelo’ offre un viaggio straordinario attraverso la storia, l’arte e la spiritualità che unisce il territorio marchigiano alla Città Eterna.

L’esposizione, che si snoda tra documenti preziosi e opere inedite, celebra il legame
profondo tra le Marche e la Chiesa cattolica, rivelando l’influenza che i papi e i santi nati in questa regione hanno avuto nel plasmare la cultura ecclesiastica e artistica italiana.
Un’occasione imperdibile per immergersi in una storia di fede e arte in un museo
prestigioso come Castel Sant’Angelo, ma anche un’importante vetrina per la promozione del territorio marchigiano. Attraverso il dialogo tra arte sacra e storia ecclesiastica, questa esposizione invita infatti i visitatori ad esplorare la nostra regione per scoprirne le radici
culturali e spirituali”.

Le sezioni della mostra

La mostra è suddivisa in tre sezioni.

Nella prima vengono raccontati i papi suddivisi in tre fasce: età medievale, età moderna e Risorgimento.

Attraverso biografie ed elementi che li contraddistinguono come ritratti, medaglie, oggetti legati alla loro committenza il visitatore potrà ammirare capolavori emozionanti come il
tabernacolo di El Greco legato alla figura del Papa Sisto V.

Nella seconda sezione saranno i Santi e i beati i protagonisti. San Marcellino, San Nicola da Tolentino, il Beato Sante, San Giacomo della Marca, Santa Camilla Battista da Varano, San Giuseppe da Copertino, Santa Veronica Giuliani, Santa Maria Goretti verranno narrati mediante attraverso incisioni, quadri, oggetti di culto e di valore spirituale come le preziose pagine dell’Evangelario di San Marcellino risalente al VI secolo.

Infine la terza ed ultima sezione dell’esposizione è incentrata sugli itinerari sacri delle Marche: eremi, oratori, santuari, abbazie, rinomate chiese e cattedrali, splendide testimonianze dell’arte romanica e rinascimentale.

Maria Cristina Bettini. Dal 3 ottobre 2024 fino al 2 marzo 2025 a Castel Sant’Angelo a Roma.

Popes and Saints of the Marche at Castel Sant’Angelo

Today, October 3, the exhibition opens to the public at Castel Sant’Angelo, set up in the Upper Armoury Rooms, which tells the story of the connection between Rome, the city of the popes, and the artistic and cultural environment of the Marche.

Over the centuries, the Marche has had the opportunity to forge a deep bond with the Catholic Church and with Rome. Just browse back through the pages of history to realize that this region has been connected for centuries with the Papal State and has contributed to shaping the identity and social fabric of the region.

Undoubtedly, the influence that the Church and its power had on the Marche has shaped many aspects of the society of the Marche, inspiring artistic masterpieces but also significantly guiding the institutions and religious practices of the population.

The Marche is in fact a crossroads of history and faith. Its artistic and architectural heritage is part of the fabric of daily life and brings together culture and spirituality.

But not only that. The many Saints of the Marche have become a cornerstone of both religion and art. Just think of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, just to give an example.

like Castel Sant’Angelo, but also an important showcase for the promotion of the Marche region. Through the dialogue between sacred art and ecclesiastical history, this exhibition invites visitors to explore our region to discover its cultural and spiritual roots”. The sections of the exhibition

The exhibition is divided into three sections.

The first one tells the story of the popes divided into three groups: the medieval age, the modern age and the Risorgimento.

Through biographies and elements that distinguish them such as portraits, medals, objects linked to their patronage, the visitor will be able to admire exciting masterpieces such as the
tabernacle by El Greco linked to the figure of Pope Sixtus V.

In the second section, the Saints and the blessed will be the protagonists. San Marcellino, San Nicola da Tolentino, the Blessed Sante, San Giacomo della Marca, Santa Camilla Battista da Varano, San Giuseppe da Copertino, Santa Veronica Giuliani, Santa Maria Goretti will be narrated through engravings, paintings, objects of worship and spiritual value such as the precious pages of the Evangeliary of San Marcellino dating back to the 6th century.

Finally, the third and final section of the exhibition focuses on the sacred itineraries of the Marche: hermitages, oratories, sanctuaries, abbeys, renowned churches and cathedrals, splendid testimonies of Romanesque and Renaissance art.
