Come ogni anno si rinnova la tradizione dei maestri tappetari di Camaiore che, durante la notte che precede la domenica del Corpus Domine, si mettono al lavoro per creare gli spendidi tappeti di segatura.

Una tradizione secolare che quest’anno, ha come leit motiv lo stretto legame tra fede e musica con un omaggio a Giacomo Puccini in occasione del centenario della morte.

La segatura, materiale di scarto per eccellenza, viene colorata con numerose sfumature e prende nuova vita.

I 17 tappeti artistici hanno visto al lavoro altrettanti gruppi ai quali aderiscono intere famiglie, amici, semplici conoscenti e tutti coloro che amano questa particolare quanto effimera arte. Già alle otto di sera i tappetari sono al lavoro per dar forma alle loro creazioni e per tutta la notte continuano a lavorare.

All’alba qualcuno ancora non ha terminato le composizioni più complesse.

Alle ore dieci avrà inizio la processione del Corpus Domine che, passo dopo passo delle persone partecipanti, cancellerà ogni traccia di quei lavori che hanno alle spalle lunghe progettazioni.

Nei mesi precedenti infatti vengono realizzati gli stampi adoperando pannelli di compensato traforati e poi si procede con la colorazione della segatura con un gran numero di tonalità di colore.

Motivi geometrici complessi e figure elaborate vengono associati per dar forma a straordinarie opere d’arte che durano solo una notte.

Passeggiando in notturna per le strade del centro di Camaiore non ho potuto fare a meno di notare su tre differenti tappeti gli splendidi angeli musicanti di Melozzo da Forlì, affrescati dall’artista nel 1472 per la chiesa dei Santi Apostoli a Roma, oggi staccati e custoditi nei Musei Vaticani.

Mirabile anche il volto di Cristo del gruppo Greenway che nei suoi colori sembra ispirato ai celeberrimi murales di Kobra, il noto Street artist di San Paolo, Brasile.

Porta Nuova invece propone un tappeto che nel decoro principale ricorda le figure surreali di Luigi Ontani mentre la Torre propone la riproduzione di una vetrata che ha come soggetto un angelo del pittore preraffaellita Edward Burne-Jones.

Arte, storia, fede e musica in questa serie di tappeti diventano qualcosa di imprescindibile.

The sawdust carpets in Camaiore for Corpus Domine

Like every year, the tradition of the master carpet makers of Camaiore is renewed who, during the night preceding the Sunday of Corpus Domine, get to work to create the splendid sawdust carpets.

A centuries-old tradition which this year has as its leitmotif the close link between faith and music with a tribute to Giacomo Puccini on the occasion of the centenary of his death.

Sawdust, waste material par excellence, is colored with numerous shades and takes on a new appearance.

The 17 artistic carpets saw the same number of groups at work, which included entire families, friends, simple acquaintances and all those who love this particular and ephemeral art. Already at eight in the evening the upholsterers are at work giving shape to their creations and continue to work throughout the night.

At dawn someone still hadn’t finished the more complex compositions. At ten o’clock the Corpus Domine procession will pass which, step by step of the people participating, will erase every trace of those works that have months of planning behind them.

In fact, in the previous months the molds are made using perforated plywood panels and then the sawdust is colored with a large number of color shades. Complex geometric patterns and elaborate figures are combined to create extraordinary works of art that last only one night.

Walking through the streets of the center of Camaiore at night I couldn’t help but notice the splendid musician angels by Melozzo da Forlì on three different carpets, frescoed by the artist in 1472 for the church of the Santi Apostoli in Rome, now detached and preserved in the Vatican Museums.

Also admirable is the face of Christ by the Greenway group whose colors seem inspired by the famous murals of Kobra, the well-known street artist from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Porta Nuova, on the other hand, offers a carpet whose main decoration recalls the surreal figures of Luigi Ontani, while the Tower offers the reproduction of a stained glass window whose subject is an angel by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones.

Art, history, faith and music become something essential in this series of carpets.
