In questo disegno denso di pathos, tracciai a gesso nero Cristo Crocifisso, posizionato fra la Vergine e San Giovanni apostolo.

Volli adoperare anche la biacca, sia come lumeggiatura che per mascherare alcuni pentimenti. Purtroppo l’impietoso scorrere del tempo l’ha fatta ossidare in alcune zone.

E’ uno studio che risale agli ultimi dieci anni della mia vita, realizzato fra il 1555 e il 1564, anno della mia morte.

Posi particolare cura nel disegnare la croce e la posizione finale che scelsi la tracciai con linee molto più marcate. In origine si trovava più spostata verso sinistra e la testa del Cristo era sollevata. Nella versione finale invece feci pendere il capo oramai esanime girandolo verso sinistra, oltre il montante della croce.

Devo dire anche che le linee dritte della croce non le disegnai a mano libera ma preferii adoperai un regolo.

Non è presente la ferita nel costato inferta dal soldato romano Longino e nemmeno disegnai chiodi o altre ferite. Il corpo è incorrotto sebbene nella sua monumentalità mostri sofferenza.

La Vergine a sinistra si rannicchia vicino alle gambe di Cristo toccandole: sembra quasi che il suo volto diventi un tutt’uno con gli arti del Salvatore.

Questo disegno appartiene alle collezioni dei British Museum e verrà esposto nella mostra “Michelangelo. The last decades”, dedicata ai miei ultimi trent’anni di vita.

Aprirà i battenti proprio al British Museum dal 2 maggio fino al 28 luglio 2024. Ve ne ho parlato QUA.

Christ Crucified between the Virgin and Saint John

In this drawing full of pathos, I traced in black chalk the Crucified Christ, positioned between the Virgin and Saint John the Apostle.

I also wanted to use white lead, both as a highlight and to mask some repentances. Unfortunately, the merciless passage of time has caused it to oxidize in some areas.

It is a study that dates back to the last ten years of my life, carried out between 1555 and 1564, the year of my death.

I took particular care in drawing the cross and the final position I chose I traced with much stronger lines. Originally it was positioned further to the left and Christ’s head was raised. In the final version, however, I made the now lifeless head hang, turning it to the left, beyond the upright of the cross.

I must also say that I did not draw the straight lines of the cross freehand but preferred to use a ruler.

The wound in the side inflicted by the Roman soldier Longinus is not present and I did not even draw nails or other wounds. The body is incorrupt although in its monumentality it shows suffering.

The Virgin on the left crouches close to Christ’s legs, touching them: it almost seems that her face becomes one with the Savior’s limbs.

This drawing belongs to the collections of the British Museum and will be exhibited in the exhibition “Michelangelo. The last decades”, dedicated to my last thirty years of life.
