La testa di Calliope scolpita in marmo di Carrara da Canova verrà presto battuta all’asta dalla casa d’aste francese Artcurial durante la vendita dal titolo “Antichi Maestri e Ottocento”.

Il busto femminile con i tratti del volto idealizzati, incorniciati dai riccioli che caratterizzano molte opere muliebri dell’artista, raffigura la musa della mitologia greca Calliope.

Il professore Mario Gaudenzio, esperto di Canova ha saputo scorgere nei lineamenti cos’ delicati della giovane, un possibile ritratto di Maria Luisa d’Asburgo.

La stima del busto di Calliope è compresa fra i 3 e i 4 milioni di euro e verrà battuta all’asta il 20 marzo.

Per dar forma all’opera attorno al 1812, ovvero nel momento più alto della sua carriera, Canova si ispirò liberamente alle nove muse antiche custodite nel Museo Pio clementino che ben conosceva.

La prima versione di Calliope venne commissionata a Canova da Giovanni Rosini, poeta toscano nonché biografo dell’artista.

Il busto piacque talmente tanto che ne furono richiesti altri uguali all’artista come quello per la contessa di Albany, appartenente oggi al Musée Fabre di Montpellier.

La scultura in questione appartenne a Gaspard Gougaud, uno dei fedelissimi ufficiali di Napoleone che lo seguì durante tutte le sue campagne e non lo abbandonò nemmeno durante l’esilio di Sant’Elena.

Fu sempre lui che aiutò Napoleone a mettere nero su bianco le proprie memorie.

Le collezioni ereditata dalla famiglia Gourgaud fu state disperse in una vendita parigina nel 2001,nella quale era incluso il busto dal titolo Portrait présumé de l’Impératrice Marie Louise, ovvero la testa di Calliope in questione.

Canova’s Calliope at auction

The head of Calliope sculpted in Carrara marble by Canova will soon be auctioned by the French auction house Artcurial during the sale entitled “Ancient Masters and the Nineteenth Century”.
