Le Opere del Natale: l’Adorazione dei pastori del Cerano
L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei pastori dipinta a olio su tavola da Giovanni Battista Crespi, più noto come il Cerano.
Il Cerano deve il suo nomignolo all’omonimo paese che lo vide venire al mondo in provincia di Novara, il 23 dicembre del 1573.
Fu un abile e rinomato pittore ma anche apprezzato scultore e architetto.
Sono numerose le pale d’altare che vi ha lasciato in eredità, tutte caratterizzate da pose e gestualità tipiche del periodo rinascimentale ma con cromie prossime allo stile del Barocci.
Nella parte alta del dipinto si vede un coro di angeli che si affaccia da un’apertura fra le nuvole per poter ammirare il Bambino appena venuto al mondo.
Mentre al centro un angelo con un cartiglio e privo di vesti pare rischiarare l’atmosfera, i due colleghi in primo piano sono riccamente abbigliati e suonano note celestiali adoperando un violino e un mandolino.
Più in basso San Giuseppe e la Vergine sono in adorazione del Figlio mentre il bue e l’asinello scaldano l’aria. Proprio alle spalle del Bambino, compare il volto di un lupo, simbolo del male in agguato.
Poco a poco i pastori giunti al luogo della nascita di Cristo si avvicinano alla mangiatoia per rendere omaggio al Salvatore.
Questo prezioso dipinto realizzato dal Cerano fra il 1592 e il 1595 è custodito presso la Galleria Sabauda dei Musei Reali di Torino.

The Works of Christmas: the Adoration of the shepherds of Cerano
The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Shepherds painted in oil on panel by Giovanni Battista Crespi, better known as Cerano.
Cerano owes its nickname to the town of the same name that saw it come into the world in the province of Novara on 23 December 1573.
He was a skilled and renowned painter but also an appreciated sculptor and architect. There are numerous altarpieces that he left as a legacy, all characterized by poses and gestures typical of the Renaissance period but with colors close to Barocci’s style.
In the upper part of the painting you can see a choir of angels looking out from an opening in the clouds to admire the Child who has just come into the world.
While in the center an angel with a scroll and without clothes seems to lighten the atmosphere, the two colleagues in the foreground are richly dressed and play celestial notes using a violin and a mandolin.
Further down, Saint Joseph and the Virgin are adoring their Son while the ox and the donkey warm the air. Right behind the Child, the face of a wolf appears, a symbol of lurking evil.
Little by little the shepherds who have arrived at the place of Christ’s birth approach the manger to pay homage to the Savior.
This precious painting created by Cerano between 1592 and 1595 is kept in the Sabauda Gallery of the Royal Museums of Turin.
