La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Bagnante, scolpita da Antonio Tantardini nel 1878, un’opera sensuale scolpita nel marmo statuario di Carrara.

Tandardini divenne ben presto noto per le sublimi figure muliebri a cui era capace di dar corpo e anima con gli strumenti del mestiere, guidato da un raffinato intelletto e da sapiente maestria.

Tantardini, nato a Milano il 12 giugno del 1829, fu uno dei massimi scultori dell’Ottocento tanto che Vicario volle sottolineare la sua “abilità tecnica stupefacente” .

 Si era formato e perfezionato all’Accademia di Brera di Milano sotto l’attenta guida di un altro grande scultore: Pompeo Marchesi. Le sue sculture ricordano quelle del Bartolini anche se sono più vezzose, con l’aggiunta di numerosi dettagli come nastri e collane.

Lo scultore Antonio Tantardini ha lasciato a voi posteri numerose opere di mirabile fattura come per esempio questa stessa Bagnante stante o la Bagnante seduta, Faust e Margherita e l’Allegoria del Risorgimento.

La Bagnante in un atteggiamento che porta con la mente a pensare a una Venere Pudica, si copre il pube adoperando la veste che si è appena tolta. Volge lo sguardo verso le acque e ne sembra intimorita.

Con il piede destro portato in avanti prova a saggiare la temperatura dell’acqua prima di immergersi. La giovane ha i capelli raccolti in un’acconciatura, trattenuti da un nastro sul capo.

Al collo ha una medaglia trattenuta da uno spago legato con un piccolo fiocco.

Lo scultore volle apporre sulla base la propria firma e la data di esecuzione incidendo a punta di scalpello la dicitura ANT.NIO . TANTARDINI . / MILANO . 1878 .

Sculpture of the day: the Bather by Tantardini

🇬🇧The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Bather, sculpted by Antonio Tantardini in 1878, a sensual work carved in Carrara statuary marble…

Tandardini soon became known for the refined female figures to which he was capable of giving body and soul with the tools of the trade guided by a refined intellect and expert craftsmanship.

Tantardini, born in Milan on 12 June 1829, was one of the greatest sculptors of the nineteenth century, so much so that Vicario wanted to underline his “amazing technical ability”.

He trained and perfected his skills at the Brera Academy in Milan under the careful guidance of another great sculptor: Pompeo Marchesi. His sculptures are reminiscent of those of Bartolini even if they are more charming, with the addition of numerous details such as ribbons and necklaces.

The sculptor Antonio Tantardini has left to you posterity numerous works of admirable workmanship such as this same Standing Bather or the Seated Bather, Faust and Margherita and the Allegory of the Risorgimento.

The Bather, in an attitude that makes one think of a Pudic Venus, covers her pubis using the dress she has just taken off. She turns her gaze towards the water and seems intimidated by it. With her right foot brought forward she tries to test the temperature of the water before diving in. The young woman has her hair gathered in a hairstyle, held back by a ribbon on her head.

Around her neck is a medal held by a string tied with a small bow.
