All’interno del prezioso archivio di Casa Buonarroti, sono oltre 130 i disegni architettonici miei, di sicura paternità, che vanno dal periodo della Fabbrica di San Lorenzo fino ai progetti romani degli ultimi anni della mia vita.

Disegni talmente affascinanti e privi di errori che Pietro Rosselli nel febbraio del 1526 mi scrisse in una lettera dicendomi che mi sarebbe bastato un carboncino in mano per confondere tutti gli altri pittori, scultori e architetti dell’epoca.

“E io Gli one risposto (al cardinale Giulio de’ Medici) a visso a visso, avendolo fatto voi non puuonne essere se non buon disegn, perchè senpre dite nnon intendere e nnon esere vostra arte, e dipoi chir uno charbone chonfondete tuti gli maestri de li nostre metieri, si ‘n isqultura, sì in pitura, sì in architetura”.

Ebbene si, mi capitò di scrivere “non sono architector” ma col senno di poi architetto lo ero eccome. Conoscevo i miei punti di forza e le mie debolezze a menadito.

La ricerca della perfezione era il mio cruccio quotidiano e avevo sempre l’impressione di non fare mai abbastanza.

Avevo ben chiari i fondamenti dell’architettura e, come ebbe poi modo di scrivere Christof Thoenes “Egli non sapeva concepire un edificio se non come una scultura di grande formato; un intreccio di blocchi accatastati e ammorsati uno all’altro”

Me and architectural drawings

Inside the precious archive of Casa Buonarroti, there are over 130 architectural drawings of mine, of certain authorship, ranging from the period of the Fabbrica di San Lorenzo to the Roman projects of the last years of my life.

Drawings so fascinating and free of errors that Pietro Rosselli wrote to me in a letter in February 1526 that a piece of charcoal in my hand was enough to confuse all the other painters, sculptors and architects.

“And I replied to him (to Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici) face to face, since you have done it it cannot fail to be a good drawing because although you always say that it is not your art, with a piece of charcoal in your hand you know how to confuse all the other masters of our times, both in sculpture, painting and architecture”.

Well yes, I happened to write “I’m not an architector” but in hindsight I certainly was an architect. I knew my strengths and weaknesses inside out.

The search for perfection was my daily worry and I always had the impression of never doing enough. I had the fundamentals of architecture very clear and, as Christof Thoenes later wrote, “He did not know how to conceive a building except as a large-scale sculpture; a group of blocks stacked and clamped together”.
