La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Dama col Mazzolino del Verrocchio, scolpita dall’artista attorno al 1475, anno in cui venni al mondo io.

Mentre il Verrocchio era già un artista affermato e molto richiesto, io ero alle prese con i primi vagiti in quel di Caprese.

Non è dato sapere chi fosse l’elegante donna omaggiata con questo busto realizzato dal Verrocchio né quale sia stata la committenza ma ci sono diverse ipotesi a riguardo. A lungo si è pensato potesse essere il ritratto di Lucrezia, citato nell’inventario redatto dopo la morte di Lorenzo il Magnifico.

Ma quale Lucrezia? L’amante platonica Donati oppure la madre Lucrezia Tornabuoni? Non è da escludere la dama possa avere le sembianze di Fioretta Gorini, amante del fratello Giuliano de’ Medici, assassinato poi nella Congiura dei Pazzi.

Quello che è certo è che la Dama col Mazzolino, con la sua impostazione, fu un’opera totalmente innovativa.

Il taglio del busto che arriva fino ai fianchi e la presenza delle mani portate al petto che tengono un mazzolino di fiori caratterizzate da un’estrema naturalezza sono dettagli che non si erano mai visti prima se non in pittura.

La resa dell’abito e dell’acconciatura della dama sono estremamente curate.

Il Verrocchio, per evitare di scolpire un busto austero e troppo rigido, scelse con attenzione di non usare una visione frontale ma preferì girare percettibilmente il volto della dama rispetto all’asse centrale.

Se volete ammirare questo capolavoro del Verrocchio, non vi rimane altro da fare che visitare lo stupendo Museo Nazionale del Bargello a Firenze, uno dei musei più belli e importanti del mondo.

Sculpture of the day: Lady with bouquet by Verrocchio

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Verrocchio’s Lady with Bouquet, sculpted by the artist around 1475, the year I came into the world. While Verrocchio was already an established and much requested artist, I was grappling with the first stirrings in that of Caprese.

It is not known who the elegant woman honored with this bust made by Verrocchio was, nor who was the client, but there are several hypotheses in this regard. For a long time it was thought that it could be the portrait of Lucrezia, mentioned in the inventory drawn up after the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent.

But which Lucretia? Platonic lover Donati or mother Lucrezia Tornabuoni? It cannot be excluded that the lady may have the appearance of Fioretta Gorini, lover of her brother Giuliano de’ Medici, who was later assassinated in the Pazzi conspiracy.

What is certain is that the Dama col Mazzolino, with its setting, was a totally innovative work. The cut of the bust that reaches the hips and the presence of hands brought to the chest holding a bouquet of flowers characterized by extreme naturalness are details that had never been seen before except in painting.

The rendering of the lady’s dress and hairstyle are extremely accurate.

Verrocchio, to avoid sculpting an austere and too rigid bust, carefully chose not to use a frontal view but preferred to perceptibly turn the lady’s face with respect to the central axis.

If you want to admire this masterpiece by Verrocchio, there is nothing left to do but visit the stupendous Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, one of the most beautiful and important museums in the world.
