La Madonna della Scala è la prima opera mia arrivata fino ai vostro giorni.

Ne viene fatta menzione per la prima volta nella seconda edizione delle vite del Vasari, nel 1568, che racconta come l’erede nonché mio nipote Lionardo Buonarroti l’avesse donata a Cosimo I de’ Medici “il quale la tenne per cosa singularissima, non essendoci di sua mano altro basso rilievo che questo di scultura”.

Il termine “donare” è un po’ fuori luogo in questo caso. Leonardo in pratica fu costretto a cedere i miei lavori al duca per evitare ritorsioni.

Avevo appena sedici anni quando terminai di lavorare al bassorilievo in marmo ma già era chiaro quanta padronanza avessi con la materia e gli attrezzi del mestiere.

La Madonna seduta di profilo sopra un sasso squadrato è avvolta in un delicato panneggio. Con una mano abbraccia il Figlioletto seduto in grembo mentre con l’altra alza la veste in corrispondenza del seno per allattarlo.

L’ispirazione di stampo donatelliano è palese e volle metterla in luce anche il Vasari sottolineando il fatto che nella Madonna della Scala scolpita da un me ragazzino ci fosse più grazia e più disegno rispetto allo stiacciato del sommo Donatello.

The Madonna della Scala is the first work of mine that has come down to your day.

The Donatellian inspiration is very evident and Vasari also wanted to highlight it, emphasizing the fact that in the Madonna della Scala sculpted by a boy of mine there was more grace and more design than in the siacciato of the great Donatello.
