La Scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Disegnatrice di Pietro Magni.

Meno celebre della più fortunata Leggitrice, l’opera fu commissionata all’artista da Nicola Bottaccin nel 1872 per arricchire il suo personale museo a Palazzo Zuckermann a Padova, dove ancora oggi si trova.

La ragazza scolpita nel marmo da Magni è intenta a disegnare sul libro dedicato agli schizzi che appoggia sulle ginocchia. Ha lo sguardo fisso sul soggetto da riprodurre e con la mano destra tiene la matita ben appuntita che traccia sul foglio il disegno.

La Disegnatrice siede su di una sedia impagliata e ha il busto fasciato in uno strettissimo bustino che contrasta con la gonna ampia e ricca di pieghe.

Mentre è mirabile la resa dell’abito e delle delicate mani intente a disegnare, il volto e i capelli a mio avviso sono scolpiti con meno enfasi di quelli della Leggitrice.

Quest’opera di Magni ebbe una lunga gestazione che fece preoccupare non poco il committente. Bottaccin attendeva di avere le dimensioni esatte dell’opera per poter far eseguire il piedistallo sul quale la avrebbe poi posizionata.

Magni però gli disse che il marmo scelto in origine risultava essere troppo macchiato e che aveva avuto bisogno di tempo per scegliere un nuovo blocco. Gli garantì di averne trovato uno talmente candido da fare concorrenza a quello della Leggitrice ma ovviamente i tempi della lavorazione si stavano allungando troppo.

Bottaccini temeva che la consegna non sarebbe avvenuta entro i tempi stabiliti anche perché lo scultore era impegnato anche con altri lavori.

Nell’aprile del 1873 Bottaccin scrisse a Magni per dirgli di consegnarla entro i primi di giugno, momento in cui era prevista l’inaugurazione del suo museo.

Le cose molto spesso prendono pieghe inaspettate e Bottaccin fu costretto da eventi personali a rimandare l’apertura del museo di qualche mese. Grazie a quel ritardo Magni ebbe modo di concludere la scultura con più calma e maggior tempo a disposizione.

Magni, pima di ultimare il lavoro, partì alla volta di Vienna e fu lì che si ammalò seriamente e riuscì a rientrare solo agli inizi di luglio in Italia per rimettersi al lavoro.

A conti fatti, nei primissimi giorni di agosto la scultura della Disegnatrice ancora non era arrivata al nuovo museo di destinazione.

Sculpture of the day: the Designer by Pietro Magni

The Sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the Designer by Pietro Magni.

Less famous than the more successful Reader, the work was commissioned from the artist by Nicola Bottaccin in 1872 to enrich his personal museum at Palazzo Zuckermann in Padua, where it is still located today.

The girl sculpted in marble by Magni is intent on drawing on the book dedicated to sketches that she places on her knees. She has her gaze fixed on the subject to be reproduced and with her right hand she holds the well-sharpened pencil which traces her drawing on the paper.

The designer sits on a straw chair and her bust is wrapped in a very tight bodice which contrasts with the wide and pleated skirt.

While the rendering of the dress and the delicate hands intent on drawing is admirable, in my opinion the face and hair are sculpted with less emphasis than those of the Reader.

This work by Magni had a long gestation which made the client very worried. Bottaccin waited to have the exact dimensions of the work in order to have the pedestal on which he would then place it.

Magni, however, told him that the marble originally chosen turned out to be too stained and that he had needed time to choose a new block. He assured him that he had found one so candid as to compete with that of the Reader but obviously the processing times were getting too long.

Bottaccini feared that the delivery would not take place within the established times also because the sculptor was also busy with other works.

In April 1873 Bottaccin wrote to Magni to tell him to deliver it by early June, when the inauguration of his museum was scheduled.

Things very often take unexpected turns and Bottaccin was forced by personal events to postpone the opening of the museum for a few months. Thanks to that delay, Magni was able to finish the sculpture more calmly and with more time available.

Before completing the work, Magni left for Vienna and it was there that he fell seriously ill and only managed to return to Italy at the beginning of July to get back to work.

On balance, in the very first days of August the sculpture of the Designer had not yet arrived at the new destination museum.
