A distanza di una settimana dallo scandaloso licenziamento dell’insegnante Carrasquilla in Florida solo perché ha parlato di arte rinascimentale in classe mostrando mirabili foto del David e di altre opere di quel periodo, Simonetta Brandolini d’Adda si esprime sulla questione.

Simonetta Brandolini d’Adda, insignita dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana nel 2019, è la presidente della prestigiosa fondazione Friends of Florence che, dal 1998 ad oggi, ha raccolto e donato 12milioni di dollari destinati a 250 progetti di conservazione nella regione Toscana.

Fra i vari progetti realizzati, Friends of Florence ha pagato le indagini diagnostiche in vista del restauro del David del 2014, ha finanziato il restauro della Pietà Bandini e recentemente ha pagato sia il restauro della Battaglia dei Centauri e della Madonna della Scala sia il riallestimento completo della Sala dei Marmi di Casa Buonarroti.

“Tutta la cultura e con essa i valori del mondo occidentale si fonda sull’insegnamento artistico, filosofico e culturale che ci è stato tramandato dai grandi geni del Rinascimento attraverso i capolavori che tutti noi conosciamo.

Quale mondo sarebbe senza la bellezza e l’ispirazione di Michelangelo Buonarroti, Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Beato Angelico, Masaccio e dei tantissimi altri artisti che hanno realizzato opere d’arte e di cultura di inestimabile valore? L’arte ci aiuta a vivere e a sperare in un futuro migliore.

Purtroppo l’ignoranza esiste in tutto il mondo, e l’episodio orrendo accaduto alla Tallahassee Classical School in Florida non è soltanto un esempio di questa scarsa educazione alla cultura, ma testimonia e ci fa capire quanto possa essere dannosa la non conoscenza. Non solo perché nega la comprensione di un’opera come il David di Michelangelo, ma anche perché impedisce di far crescere i nostri figli in un mondo aperto, che rispetta, che accoglie e che apprezza gli studi, l’umanesimo, la perfezione e l’armonia sulla quale si basa la vera bellezza e sulla quale si fonda la civiltà occidentale.

Per fortuna esistono tantissimi americani che apprezzano e sostengono da moltissimo tempo il patrimonio culturale italiano attraverso Fondazioni come Friends of Florence, Save Venice, the American Friends of the Uffizi e tantissime altre istituzioni che si prodigano per la conservazione della cultura italiana come patrimonio dell’intera umanità… Milioni di cittadini americani si recano ogni anno in Italia per visitare i capolavori rinascimentali, mandano i propri figli a studiare a Firenze, a Roma e in altre città d’arte. Se questo accade è perché la maggior parte delle persone e del popolo americano comprende l’importanza dell’arte e della cultura italiane nella formazione dell’uomo contemporaneo, e nel futuro dei tanti giovani che in questo modo possono guardare al domani con coscienza critica e autodeterminazione.

Friends of Florence nasce proprio dall’amore dei nostri donatori, per la città di Firenze e per la Toscana, e dalla consapevolezza che il patrimonio culturale italiano, in particolare proprio quello di Firenze e della Toscana è alla base della nostra cultura occidentale. Da qui il nostro dovere civile e morale di tutelare e salvaguardare questo patrimonio per tutta l’umanità e per offrire alle generazioni presenti e future la stessa possibilità che abbiamo noi di fruire di questi tesori e di crescere secondo i valori che fondano la civiltà occidentale di cui siamo parte.

The David and the dismissal of the teacher: the intervention of Friends of Florence

Unfortunately ignorance exists all over the world, and the horrendous episode that happened at the Tallahassee Classical School in Florida is not only an example of this poor education in culture, but it testifies and makes us understand how harmful ignorance can be. Not only because it denies the understanding of a work like Michelangelo’s David, but also because it prevents our children from growing up in an open world that respects, welcomes and appreciates studies, humanism, perfection and the harmony on which true beauty is based and on which Western civilization is based.
