L’Opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è un dipinto di fine Ottocento molto noto che ritrae una giovane donna avvolta in una mantella blu che stringe a sé un bambino addormentato.

La tavola fu dipinta a olio dal pittore Roberto Ferruzzi sui Colli Euganei, a Luvigliano che, grazie a questa raffinata opera riuscì a vincere la seconda edizione della Biennale di Venezia del 1897.

Il pittore in realtà non aveva intenzione di dipingere una Madonna con il Figlio ma voleva proporre una scena intima di maternità. Per dar forma alla sua idea, prese come modella l’adolescente Angelina Cian che teneva fra le proprie braccia il fratellino più piccolo. Angelina Cian era la seconda di quindici figli e il bimbo che stringe teneramente era Giovanni.

La dolcezza espressiva dei due volti fece riscuotere all’opera un grande successo tanto che l’artista decise di dare al suo lavoro una connotazione sacra. Il dipinto così cambiò titolo e da “Maternità” divenne la “Madonnina”.

La fama dell’opera oltrepassò di gran lunga quella dell’artista che l’aveva realizzata. Fu subito comprata per la cifra di trentamila lire, un prezzo esorbitante per quell’epoca. Il dipinto fu successivamente rivenduto più volte passando di mano in mano e appartenne anche ai Fratelli Alinari che prima di cederlo un’altra volta, si assicurano il diritto di riprodurne l’immagine in ogni modo e con ogni mezzo.

Dove si trova oggi la Madonna con Bambino del Ferruzzi? Bella domanda, nemmeno è dato sapere se esista sempre o se sia andata distrutta.

L’ultimo acquirente noto fu un americano che la caricò su un bastimento per portarla negli USA. Sembra che l’opera possa essere finita in fondo al mare seguendo il destino della nave affondata a causa di una tempesta o per colpa di un siluramento effettuato dai tedeschi. Questa perlomeno è la versione data della fine dell’opera da un discendente della famiglia Ferruzzi.

Esiste però anche una versione diversa di come siano andati i fatti. Il mecenate John George Alexander Leishman avrebbe acquistato l’opera arrivata poi presso una collezione privata in Pennsylvania attorno agli anni Cinquanta. Fatto sta che l’attuale collocazione rimane sconosciuta anche secondo questa altra dinamica dei fatti che portò l’opera oltre oceano.

The works of Christmas: the Madonna del Ferruzzi

The Christmas Works that I propose to you today is a well-known late th century painting that portrays a young woman wrapped in a blue cape holding a sleeping child to her.

The panel was painted in oil by the painter Roberto Ferruzzi on the Euganean Hills, in Luvigliano who, thanks to this refined work, managed to win the second edition of the Venice Biennale in 1897.

The painter didn’t actually intend to paint a Madonna and Child but he wanted to propose an intimate maternity scene. To give shape to his idea of him, he took as a model the teenager Angelina Cian who was holding her younger brother in her arms. Angelina Cian was the second of fifteen children and the child she held dearly was Giovanni.

The expressive sweetness of the two faces made the work a great success, so much so that the artist decided to give his work a sacred connotation. The painting thus changed its title and from “Maternity” it became the “Madonnina”.

The fame of the work far exceeded that of the artist who had created it. It was immediately bought for the sum of thirty thousand lire, an exorbitant price for that time. The painting was subsequently resold several times passing from hand to hand and also belonged to the Alinari brothers who, before selling it again, ensured the right to reproduce the image in any way and by any means.

Where is Ferruzzi’s Madonna and Child located today? Good question, we don’t even know if it always exists or if it has been destroyed.

The last known buyer was an American who loaded her onto a ship to take her to the USA. It seems that the work may have ended up at the bottom of the sea at that juncture following the fate of the ship sunk due to a storm or due to a torpedoing carried out by the Germans. This at least is the version given of the end of the work by a descendant of the Ferruzzi family.

However, there is also a different version of how the facts went. The patron John George Alexander Leishman allegedly bought the work which then arrived in a private collection in Pennsylvania around the 1950s. The fact is that the current location remains unknown also according to this other dynamic of the facts that brought the work overseas.
