Nel corso dei secoli furono innumerevoli gli artisti che vollero realizzare un mio ritratto. C’è chi volle immortalare il mio aspetto avendomi conosciuto molto bene in vita ma anche chi, nato dopo la mia dipartita dal vostro mondo, non esitò nell’omaggiarmi con ritratti, facendo spesso riferimento ai busti che aveva realizzato Daniele da Volterra.

Fra questi artisti vale la pena annoverare Pier Leone Ghezzi che, parecchi anni dopo la mia morte, disegnò il mio volto a matita, acquerellato con un color seppia.

Quel ritratto mi raffigurava a mezzo busto, visto di profilo e dal lato sinistro.

Sotto il disegno, il Ghezzi scrive: “Ritratto di Micheal Angelo Buonaroti figlio del V. conte di Canossa pittore, scultore et architetto, il detto ritratto è stato imitato diligentemente da me cav. Ghezzi dal suo originale che con gran custodia si ammira nelle stanze della fabrica di S. Pietro a Roma”

L’artista mise quel mio ritratto all’inizio di un’importante raccolta di disegni, gemme antiche e cammei scrivendo nel foglio che lo precede che questo ritratto era stato realizzato il 28 aprile del 1740, adoperando a modello un busto conservato presso la Fabbrica di San Pietro.

Probabilmente trasse ispirazione dal busto in gesso che oggi è conservato presso l’Accademia di San Luca, simile a quelli che realizzai in bronzo su commissione del mi nipote Lionardo Buonarroti dopo la mia morte.

Il volume che contiene questo mio ritratto fu venduto dal Ghezzi assieme ad altri alla Biblioteca Vaticana nel 1747.

This is how Pier Leone Ghezzi portrayed me

Over the centuries there were countless artists who wanted to make a portrait of me. There are those who wanted to immortalize my appearance having known me very well in life but also those who, born after my departure from your world, did not hesitate to pay homage to me with portraits, often referring to the busts that Daniele da Volterra had made.

Among these artists it is worth mentioning Pier Leone Ghezzi who, several years after my death, drew my face in pencil, watercolored with a sepia color.

That portrait showed me half-length, seen in profile and from the left side.

Under the drawing, Ghezzi writes: “Portrait of Micheal Angelo Buonaroti son of the V. Count of Canossa painter, sculptor and architect, the said portrait was diligently imitated by me cav. Ghezzi from his original which can be admired with great custody in the rooms of the building of S. Pietro in Rome “

The artist placed my portrait at the beginning of an important collection of drawings, ancient gems and cameos, writing in the preceding sheet that this portrait had been made on April 28, 1740, using as a model a bust preserved at the Fabbrica di Saint Peter.

He probably drew inspiration from the plaster bust that is now kept at the Accademia di San Luca, similar to those I made in bronze on commission from my nephew Lionardo Buonarroti after my death.

The volume that contains this portrait of mine was sold by Ghezzi together with others to the Vatican Library in 1747.
