Ci fu un momento in cui addirittura Benedetto Varchi mi definì “angioletto.” Io che non ero certo noto per avere un carattere placido e remissivo, fui chiamato così da un amico di lunga data. Curiosa la faccenda, vero?

Vi racconto questa storia singolare dal principio.

Accadde che dopo la mia morte, Cosimo I si preoccupò di organizzare delle esequie in grande stile senza badare a spese. Venne dunque messo in piedi un comitato che si facesse carico di tutta la macchina messa in piedi.

Cosimo I con una lettera, chiese a Benedetto Varchi di occuparsi di scrivere un discorso funebre adeguato per l’occasione. Il Varchi non se lo fece certo dire due volte e scrisse quasi un romanzo: 63 pagine di orazione funebre che lesse una dopo l’altra durante il funerale celebrato il 14 luglio del 1564, parecchi mesi dopo la mia morte.

Nella prima parte della lunghissima orazione, il Varchi citò la Battaglia dei Centauri chiamandomi angioletto: “Le prime figure che lavorasse di marmo questo angioletto, mandato dal cielo in terra da Dio, fu la Zuffa dei Centauri”.

A parte il fatto di appellarmi angioletto, il Varchi pover’omo, prese un abbaglio grande come una casa.

La Battaglia dei Centauri non fu la prima ma la terza opera in marmo a cui diedi forma nel Giardino di San Marco, ospitato da Lorenzo il Magnifico. Prima scolpii la Testa del Fauno, trafugata durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, poi la Madonna della Scala e infine la Battaglia dei Centauri, abbozzandola da sinistra verso destra, impugnando gli attrezzi del mestiere da mancino qual ero.

When Varchi called me “little angel”

There was a moment when even Benedetto Varchi called me a “little angel.” I, who was certainly not known for having a placid and submissive nature, was named after a longtime friend. Curious about the matter, right?

I’ll tell you this singular story from the beginning.

It happened that after my death, Cosimo I took care of organizing funeral ceremonies in grand style, regardless of expense. A committee was therefore set up to take charge of the whole machine set up.

Cosimo I with a letter, asked Benedetto Varchi to take care of writing a funeral speech suitable for the occasion. Varchi certainly did not have it said twice and wrote almost a novel: 63 pages of funeral oration that he read one after the other during the funeral celebrated on July 14, 1564, several months after my death.

In the first part of the very long prayer, Varchi quoted the Battle of the Centaurs calling me little angel: “The first figures who worked in marble this little angel, sent from heaven to earth by God, was the Zuffa dei Centauri”.

Apart from appealing to me as a little angel, the poor man Varchi took a mistake as big as a house.

The Battle of the Centaurs was not the first but the third marble work to which I gave shape in the Garden of San Marco, hosted by Lorenzo the Magnificent. First I sculpted the Head of the Faun, stolen during the Second World War, then the Madonna della Scala and finally the Battle of the Centaurs, sketching it from left to right, holding the tools of the left-handed trade I was.
