La Maddalena Penitente in legno di pioppo bianco è uno dei capolavori assoluti di Donatello. Il dramma che vive è tangibile. Basta guardare il volto trasfigurato o la veste consunta e lacera per lasciarsi trasportare dal suo tormento.

“Di mano di Donato è una Santa Maria Maddalena di legno in penitenza, molto bella e molto ben fatta, essendo consumata dai digiuni e dall’astinenza, intanto che pare in tutte le parti una perfezione di notomia, benissimo intesa per tutto.”

Drammatica e ricca di pathos, quest’opera fu scolpita da Donatello, fra il 1453 e il 1455, e oggi potete ammirarla nel Museo del Duomo di Firenze.

Probabilmente l’età avanzata e la sua malattia lo fecero maggiormente concentrare su tutti quei temi collegati direttamente all’aldilà, morte imminente e al pentimento dando vita così a un’opera che quasi fa sentire a disagio vedendola per quanto è struggente.

Donatello scelse di raffigurare Maria Maddalena non più giovane, quando secondo la Leggenda Aurea iniziò a pellegrinare e a digiunare nel sud della Francia.

Se la immaginò poggiando i piedi scalzi sopra una roccia e indossa una pelle consunta che le sfiora le ginocchia. Ha le mani giunte in preghiera e i capelli lunghi che le contornano il volto scavato, segnato da un’espressione che molto racconta del suo stato d’animo. La Maddalena Penitente ha un’altezza complessiva di 1,88 metri e non è dato sapere quale fosse la sua destinazione originaria.

Quello che è certo è che nel 1500 si trovava all’interno del Battistero di San Giovanni, secondo quanto riportato su un pagamento effettuato dall’Arte di Calimala.

The Penitent Magdalene has a total height of 1.88 meters and it is not known what her original destination was.
