Il ritratto che feci a Tommaso de’ Cavalieri (andato perduto)
Al mio amato Tommaso regalai stupendi disegni ma questo forse già lo sapete. Un bel giorno però mi venne in mente di ritrarlo in una di quelle espressioni che aveva quando pensava a chissà cosa o a chissà chi… magari a me.
Mi misi davanti a un foglio bianco, presi il carboncino nero e prima di tracciar qualche linea lo osservai a lungo. Sapevo bene quali erano i suoi cambi repentini d’espressione, le line che gli segnavano il volto, conoscevo a menadito quegli accenti e quelle smorfie che faceva quando stava per cominciare a parlare.
Sudai parecchio: fare il ritratto di una persona amata non è la stessa cosa che riprodurre il volto di uno sconosciuto. Alla fine però rimasi assai contento e mi ritrovai fra le mani il volto di Tommaso.
Lo guardai compiaciuto e glie lo mostrai quasi vergognandomi per non aver saputo esprimere su quella carta la passione che mi bruciava in petto per quell’uomo così bello, aggraziato e colto.
Dove finì quel disegno?
Chissà… da non molto tempo pare sia stato ritrovato presso le collezioni del Museé Bonnat di Bayonne ma permettetemi di dubitare di quel foglio. Come sapete io non vi svelo paternità perché mi piace vedervi ammattire sui miei fogli o su quelli presunti tali. Fatto sta che poco mi convince quel disegno lì.
Certo l’ha fatto qualcuno bravo ma mi tengo il beneficio del dubbio. Mi par pittosto di riconoscere in quei tratti del volto il Quaratesi che per altro ritrassi anche in un altro foglio precedente a questo.
Scrisse il Vasari nelle Vite in merito al ritratto che feci al Cavalieri: “Ritrasse Michelagnolo messer Tommaso in un cartone grande, di naturale, che nè proma nè poi di nessuno fece il ritratto, perchè aborriva il fare somigliare il vivo, se non era d’infinita bellezza”

To my beloved Thomas I gave beautiful drawings, but perhaps you already know this. One day, however, it occurred to me to portray him in one of those expressions he had when he thought of who knows what or who knows who … maybe to me.
I stood before a blank sheet of paper, took the black charcoal and looked at it for a long time before drawing a line. I knew well what were his sudden changes of expression, the lines that marked his face, I knew by heart those accents and those grimaces that he did when he was about to start talking.
I sweated a lot: making a portrait of a loved one is not the same as reproducing the face of a stranger. In the end, however, I remained very happy and I found Tommaso’s face in my hands. I looked at him smugly and showed him almost ashamed of not having been able to express on that paper the passion that burned in my chest for that man so beautiful, graceful and cultured.
Where did that design end? Who knows … not long ago it seems to have been found in the collections of the Museé Bonnat of Bayonne but let me doubt that sheet. As you know I do not disclose paternity because I like to see you mad on my sheets or on those supposed ones. The fact is there that little convince me that drawing there. Of course he did someone good but I keep the benefit of the doubt. It seems to me that I am pictorial in recognizing those features of the face of the Quaratesi, which I also refer to in another sheet preceding this one.
Vasari wrote in the Lives about the portrait that I made to the Cavalieri: “Michelagnolo painted a portrait of Messer Tommaso in a large, natural cardboard, which neither did anyone’s portraits before, because he abhorred making the living resemble, if it was not of infinite beauty “
