Gianni Crea è il clavigero dei Musei Vaticani. Chi è il clavigero? Non è altro che il custode delle quasi 3000 chiavi che aprono tutte le porte presenti nei Musei Vaticani.

C’è una chiave che ha un’importanza maggiore rispetto a tutte le altre: è quella che apre il portone della Sistina. Un luogo meraviglioso non solo per gli affreschi quattrocenteschi e miei che contiene ma anche perché dal lontano 1492 è sede del conclave. Questa chiave viene conservata nel bunker, chiusa all’interno di una busta accuratamente sigillata e controfirmata.

Gianni Crea coordina il piccolo gruppo di dieci clavigeri che quotidianamente aprono e chiudono le porte di uno dei musei più visitato al mondo. Sembra un compito assai facile e poco impegnativo ma non è esattamente così. La struttura che accoglie i Musei Vaticani è enorme e le porte da aprire e chiudere ogni giorno sono circa 500: 300 nei Musei e 200 appartenenti ai laboratori collegati. Le porte aperte vanno da quelle delle sale più celebri come la Sistina appunto o le stanze di Raffaello fino a quelle dei bagni.

Gianni Crea entra in servizio alle 5:45 del mattino ritirando le chiavi presso la Gendarmeria Vaticana. Subito dopo la Gendarmeria disinserisce gli allarmi e i clavigeri possono così entrare passando dall’ingresso dei Quattro Cancelli. Ciascuno di loro si occupa di aprire le prote di una determinata zona: le chiavi sono numerate per facilitare il compito del clavigeri.

In totale il clavigero ha a disposizione 2797 chiavi che vengono abitualmente custodite nel bunker, dotato di un particolare sistema di condizionamento d’aria che evita che si arrugginiscano. La chiave numero 1 è quella che apre il portone monumentale che attualmente è quello da cui escono i visitatori.

La chiave della Cappella Sistina, come accennato prima, è priva di numerazione. E’ il locale che viene aperto per ultimo, attorno alle sette del mattino. In realtà la Cappella Sistina non viene aperta materialmente da un clavigero ma viene effettuata dagli addetti alla Sagrestia Pontificia, chiamati sistinari. Il clavigero, nel caso della Sistina, si limita ad assistere.

Alle ore 19 i clavigeri cominciano a richiudere tutte le porte. La chiusura è un po’ più laboriosa perché gli addetti devono controllare sempre che tutte le luci siano spente, che non ci siano finestre aperte e che nei bagni tutti i rubinetti siano chiusi e che non ci siano perdite. Ah, devono anche verificare che nelle sale tutti siano andati via, nessuno escluso.

Alla fine del turno le chiavi vengono ricnosegnate alla Gendarmeria che provvede immediatamente a reinserire gli allarmi.

Gianni Crea: the clavigero of the Vatican Museums

Gianni Crea is the clavigero of the Vatican Museums. Who is the clavigero? It is nothing but the keeper of the almost 3000 keys that open all the doors in the Vatican Museums.

There is a key that has a greater importance than all the others: it is the one that opens the door of the Sistine Chapel. A wonderful place not only for the fifteenth-century and mine frescos it contains but also because it has been the seat of the conclave since 1492. This key is kept in the bunker, closed inside a carefully sealed and countersigned envelope.

Gianni Crea coordinates the small group of ten clavigers that daily open and close the doors of one of the most visited museums in the world. It seems a very easy and undemanding task but it is not exactly so. The structure that houses the Vatican Museums is enormous and the doors to open and close every day are around 500: 300 in the Museums and 200 belonging to the connected laboratories. The open doors range from those of the most famous rooms such as the Sistine Chapel or Raphael’s rooms to the bathrooms.

Gianni Crea enters service at 5:45 am by collecting the keys from the Vatican Gendarmerie. Immediately after the Gendarmerie disarms the alarms and the clavigers can thus enter by passing through the entrance of the Four Gates. Each of them takes care of opening the protes of a specific area: the keys are numbered to facilitate the task of the clavigeri.

n total, the clavigero has 2797 keys that are usually kept in the bunker, equipped with a special air conditioning system that prevents them from rusting. The key number 1 is the one that opens the monumental door that is currently the one from which visitors come out.

The key to the Sistine Chapel, as mentioned above, is without numbering. It is the place that is opened last, around seven in the morning. In reality the Sistine Chapel is not physically opened by a clavigero but is made by the workers of the Pontifical Sacristy, called sistinari. The clavigero, in the case of the Sistine Chapel, is limited to assisting.

At 7 pm the clavigers begin to close all the doors. The closure is a little more laborious because the workers must always check that all the lights are off, that there are no open windows and that in the bathrooms all the taps are closed and that there are no leaks. Ah, they must also verify that in the rooms all have gone away, without exception.

At the end of the shift the keys are re-assigned to the Gendarmerie which immediately re-enters the alarms.
