Battaglia perduta
Prima di andarmi a bere un caffè in un bar dell’Oltrarno vi voglio raccontare di quando mi commissionarono il grande affresco della Battaglia di Cascina.
Era l’estate del 1504 e l’affresco avrebbe dovuto essere eseguito nel Salone dei Cinquecento a Palazzo Vecchio, proprio di fronte alla Battaglia di Anghiari che Leonardo stava iniziando a disegnare su carta.
La sfida e il confronto fra i due affreschi aveva messo in moto una serie di meccanismi e di manie di perfezione da entrambe le parte. Nessuno dei due voleva passa male e fare un’opera meno bella dell’altro!
Studiai la composizione prima di prendere il carboncino e iniziare a realizzare i cartoni per lo spolvero. Alla fine decisi di riprodurre il momento in cui i soldati fiorentini vennero sorpresi dalle truppe nemiche pisane mentre stavano facendo il bagno in Arno.
Manno Donati, comandante fiorentino, mise tutti in guardia proclamando l’attacco ai nemici e i soldati iniziarono a vestirsi in fretta e furia. Le vesti rimanevano attaccate alla pelle perché ancora bagnata e i soldati sembrava facessero uno sforzo sovraumano per rimettersi le armature.
Per varie vicissitudini della Repubblica Fiorentina, non riuscii mai a realizzare questo grandioso affresco e purtroppo di quei cartoni non rimane niente… niente di niente…
Furono esposti a lungo in Palazzo Vecchio e in molti ne tesserono le lodi. Qualche artista li studiò attentamente ed è grazie a Aristotile da Sangallo se oggi potete avere un’idea di quello che avevo in mente di realizzare. Il sempre vostro Michelangelo Buonarroti che per il momento vi saluta
The lost Battle
Before going to drink coffee in a bar in the Oltrarno, I want to tell you about when I was commissioned to make the great fresco of the Battle of Cascina. It was the summer of 1504 and the painting should have been performed in the Salone dei Cinquecento at Palazzo Vecchio, right in front of the Battle of Anghiari that Leonardo was starting to draw on paper.
The challenge and the comparison between the two frescoes had set in motion a series of mechanisms and manias of perfection on both sides. Neither one wanted to go wrong and do a less beautiful work than the other!
I studied the composition before taking the charcoal and start making the cartons for dusting. In the end I decided to reproduce the moment when the Florentine soldiers were surprised by the Pisan enemy troops while they were taking a bath in the Arno.
Manno Donati, the Florentine commander, put everyone on guard proclaiming the attack on the enemies and the soldiers began to dress up in a hurry. The robes remained attached to the skin because they were still wet and the soldiers seemed to make a superhuman effort to get their armor back.
For various vicissitudes of the Florentine Republic, I never managed to make this great fresco and unfortunately nothing remains of those cartoons … nothing …
They were exhibited for a long time in the Palazzo Vecchio and many people praised their praise. Some artists studied them carefully and it is thanks to Sebastiano da Sangallo if today you can have an idea of what I had in mind to realize.
