La Pietà Vaticana è una delle mie opere più conosciute in tutto il mondo. Quando però venne presentata per la prima volta al pubblico, nella Cappella di Santa Petronilla della basilica costantiniana di San Pietro, si avviò un animato dibattito. Le voci che circolavano erano tante e non tutte corrette sullo scultore che aveva dato forma a quest’opera grandiosa, di una delicatezza e perfezione mai viste prima, né fra gli antichi né fra i moderni artisti.
Un bel giorno, mentre me ne stavo a osservare di nascosto chi contemplava l’opera, udii io con le mie orecchie uno strano vociferare. Pensate un po’: tutti i presenti erano convinti che la Pietà mia fosse frutto dell’ingegno di Cristoforo Solari.
Ci rimasi male parecchio e me ne andai a passo svelto da quel luogo di glorie e miserie. Sul far della sera, quando le luci del sole oramai s’erano smorzate. tornai dinnanzi alla mia Pietà con martello e scalpello per scolpirle sulla stola a lettere cubitali il nome dell’autore: io.

The Vatican Pietà is one of my best known works all over the world. However, when it was presented for the first time to the public, a lively debate took place in the Chapel of Santa Petronilla of the Constantinian basilica of San Pietro.
