Dal 23 giugno al 20 settembre 2026 la Galleria Borghese di Roma ospiterà la grande mostra “Metamorfosi. Ovidio e le arti”, un progetto espositivo internazionale nato dalla collaborazione con il Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam.

L’esposizione riunirà oltre 80 opere provenienti da importanti istituzioni museali, mettendo in dialogo capolavori di artisti come me, Correggio, Tiziano, Rubens, Poussin, Gérôme, Rodin e Brancusi.

Un viaggio nell’immaginario delle Metamorfosi

La mostra, curata da Francesca Cappelletti e Frits Scholten, prende avvio dal poema di Ovidio, uno dei testi più influenti della cultura occidentale. Il progetto esplora la metamorfosi come principio universale, capace di attraversare il cosmo, la materia e la condizione umana.

Attraverso celebri miti e racconti spesso tragici, l’esposizione mostrerà come le Metamorfosi abbiano fornito agli artisti un repertorio inesauribile di immagini, passioni e conflitti. Amore, inganno, violenza, redenzione e trasformazione diventano così chiavi di lettura dell’arte europea dal Rinascimento fino all’età moderna.

Dall’Ovidio medievale al mito nell’arte europea

Il percorso espositivo analizzerà anche l’“Ovide moralisé”, la riscrittura medievale del poema, che influenzò profondamente la rappresentazione dei miti in epoca rinascimentale.
In mostra, opere di grandi maestri dialogheranno con il testo ovidiano, evidenziando la forza visiva e concettuale delle storie di trasformazione.

Il ruolo simbolico della Galleria Borghese

La sede romana non è casuale: la Galleria Borghese è storicamente legata all’universo delle Metamorfosi.
Il cardinale Scipione Borghese concepì la villa come un sistema simbolico in cui architettura, scultura e mito si fondono. Nel Settecento, i restauri voluti da Marcantonio IV Borghese e affidati ad Antonio Asprucci rafforzarono questa visione, integrando sculture e decorazioni ispirate al poema ovidiano.

I capolavori di Bernini al centro della mostra

Fulcro dell’esposizione saranno i celebri gruppi scultorei di Gian Lorenzo Bernini, tra cui Apollo e Dafne e Plutone e Proserpina.

Queste opere, simbolo della trasformazione e del dinamismo barocco, diventeranno il cuore narrativo del percorso, insieme agli altri capolavori mitologici della Galleria.

Un percorso tra mito, corpo e trasformazione

La mostra proporrà una lettura simbolica e sensoriale del mutamento, affrontando temi come la fluidità delle identità. il rapporto tra corpo e natura, la tensione tra ordine e trasformazione, il dialogo tra umano, divino e naturale.

La metamorfosi sarà presentata non solo come trasformazione fisica, ma come categoria estetica e filosofica capace di interrogare tempo, spazio e materia.

Il catalogo e la collaborazione internazionale

Il catalogo della mostra, prodotto in collaborazione con il Rijksmuseum, sarà disponibile in italiano, inglese e olandese e includerà saggi di studiosi italiani e olandesi.
Il progetto grafico è firmato dalla designer Irma Boom.

From June 23 to September 20, 2026, the Galleria Borghese in Rome will host the major exhibition “Metamorphoses. Ovid and the Arts,” an international project born from a collaboration with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The exhibition will bring together over 80 works from major museums, bringing together masterpieces by artists such as myself, Correggio, Titian, Rubens, Poussin, Gérôme, Rodin, and Brancusi.

A Journey into the Imagery of Metamorphoses

The exhibition, curated by Francesca Cappelletti and Frits Scholten, begins with Ovid’s poem, one of the most influential texts in Western culture. The project explores metamorphosis as a universal principle, capable of pervading the cosmos, matter, and the human condition.

Through famous myths and often tragic tales, the exhibition will demonstrate how the Metamorphoses have provided artists with an inexhaustible repertoire of images, passions, and conflicts. Love, deception, violence, redemption, and transformation thus become keys to understanding European art from the Renaissance to the modern age.

From Medieval Ovid to Myth in European Art

The exhibition will also analyze the “Ovide moralisé,” the medieval rewriting of the poem, which profoundly influenced the representation of myths during the Renaissance.
On display, works by great masters will dialogue with Ovidian text, highlighting the visual and conceptual power of stories of transformation.

The Symbolic Role of the Galleria Borghese

The Roman location is no coincidence: the Galleria Borghese is historically linked to the world of the Metamorphoses.
Cardinal Scipione Borghese conceived the villa as a symbolic system in which architecture, sculpture, and myth merge. In the 18th century, the restoration commissioned by Marcantonio IV Borghese and entrusted to Antonio Asprucci reinforced this vision, integrating sculptures and decorations inspired by Ovid’s poem.

Bernini’s masterpieces at the center of the exhibition

The centerpiece of the exhibition will be Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s famous sculptural groups, including Apollo and Daphne and Pluto and Proserpina.

These works, symbols of Baroque transformation and dynamism, will become the narrative heart of the exhibition, along with the Gallery’s other mythological masterpieces.

The exhibition will offer a symbolic and sensorial interpretation of change, addressing themes such as the fluidity of identities, the relationship between body and nature, the tension between order and transformation, and the dialogue between the human, the divine, and the natural.

Metamorphosis will be presented not only as a physical transformation, but as an aesthetic and philosophical category capable of questioning time, space, and matter.

The catalog and international collaboration

The exhibition catalog, produced in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum, will be available in Italian, English, and Dutch and will include essays by Italian and Dutch scholars.
