Quando iniziai a pensare al profeta Daniele, non potevo immaginarlo fermo. Era uno dei profeti maggiori, ma soprattutto un uomo capace di leggere oltre il visibile. Sapiente, equilibrato, dotato di una mente acuta: Dio gli aveva concesso il dono di interpretare sogni e visioni, qualità che lo portarono alla corte di Nabucodonosor durante la schiavitù babilonese, dove divenne consigliere fidato.

Tra i sette profeti che affrescai nella volta della Cappella Sistina, sette come i doni dello Spirito Santo narrati da Isaia, a Daniele affidai la conoscenza.

Perché tra i profeti volli affrescare anche Daniele

Daniele è indissolubilmente legato alla predizione del Giudizio Universale e alla promessa della vita eterna. Rappresenta l’uomo che scruta il futuro, che tenta di comprendere il destino ultimo dell’umanità nel mio grande affresco della volta.

Per questo decisi di dipingerlo nel momento stesso dell’interpretazione, mentre la conoscenza prende forma attraverso la lettura e la scrittura.

Una posa carica di tensione e movimento

Lo raffigurai seduto sul trono, con le gambe leggermente divaricate, in una posa tutt’altro che statica. Il polso sinistro poggia su un grande libro degli oracoli, sorretto da un assistente; con l’altra mano annota e commenta ciò che ha appena letto su un rotolo appoggiato a un leggio, dal quale pende il calamaio.

Il volto è giovane ma teso. I lineamenti, delicati, si induriscono sotto lo sforzo del pensiero. Non è facile portare nella mente e nel cuore la visione della fine dei giorni.

Colori, vento e simbologie

I capelli di Daniele sono mossi dal vento, come se anche l’aria partecipasse alla sua inquietudine. Indossa una veste celeste e rosa, coperta da un mantello dai riflessi cangianti, mutevoli come la conoscenza stessa.

Sopra il suo capo affrescai quattro putti a monocromo che fungono da telamoni. Sono specchiati tra loro e ottenuti rovesciando il cartone preparatorio: un equilibrio studiato che sostiene idealmente la figura del profeta.

I danni del tempo e le infiltrazioni d’acqua

Daniele è una delle figure più danneggiate della volta. Le infiltrazioni d’acqua colpirono soprattutto la testa ma anche l’assistente alle sue spalle subì gravi perdite. Nel corso dei secoli, per mascherare i danni causati da umidità e salnitro, entrambe le figure furono pesantemente ritoccate a secco.

Il colore originale della gamba destra del profeta andò perduto e ciò che vediamo oggi è frutto di interventi successivi.

Il grande restauro

Solo con il grande restauro diretto da Gianluigi Colalucci. Daniele ha ritrovato leggibilità e dignità. Sono tornati visibili i passaggi cromatici originali, le vibrazioni di colore delle vesti, la profondità emotiva che avevo immaginato per lui.

Oggi Daniele è di nuovo lì, concentrato, sospeso tra lettura e scrittura. Sta cercando di capire il futuro. E, in fondo, continua a farlo anche per noi.

The Prophet Daniel and the Weight of the Future

When I began to think about the prophet Daniel, I couldn’t imagine him standing still. He was one of the greatest prophets, but above all, a man capable of seeing beyond the visible. Wise, balanced, and gifted with a keen mind: God had granted him the gift of interpreting dreams and visions, qualities that brought him to Nebuchadnezzar’s court during the Babylonian captivity, where he became a trusted advisor.

Among the seven prophets I frescoed on the Sistine Chapel ceiling—seven like the gifts of the Holy Spirit recounted by Isaiah—I entrusted Daniel with knowledge.

Why among the prophets I also wanted to fresco Daniel

Daniel is inextricably linked to the prediction of the Last Judgment and the promise of eternal life. He represents the man who peers into the future, who attempts to understand humanity’s ultimate destiny in my great fresco on the ceiling.

For this reason, I decided to paint him at the very moment of interpretation, as knowledge takes shape through reading and writing.

A pose full of tension and movement

I depicted him seated on the throne, his legs slightly apart, in a pose that is anything but static. His left wrist rests on a large oracle book, held by an assistant; with his other hand, he notes and comments on what he has just read on a scroll resting on a lectern, from which hangs the inkwell.

His face is youthful but tense. His delicate features harden under the strain of thought. It is not easy to bring the vision of the end of days into one’s mind and heart.

Colors, wind, and symbolism

Daniel’s hair is blown by the wind, as if the air itself were participating in his restlessness. He wears a light blue and pink robe, covered by a cloak with iridescent reflections, as changeable as knowledge itself.

Above his head, I frescoed four monochrome cherubs who act as telamons. They are mirrored, created by reversing the preparatory cartoon: a carefully studied balance that ideally supports the figure of the prophet.

The ravages of time and water infiltration

Daniel is one of the most damaged figures in the vault. Water infiltration primarily affected his head, but the assistant behind him also suffered serious losses. Over the centuries, to mask the damage caused by humidity and saltpeter, both figures were heavily retouched a secco.

The original color of the prophet’s right leg was lost, and what we see today is the result of subsequent interventions.

The major restoration

Only with the major restoration directed by Gianluigi Colalucci did Daniele regain his legibility and dignity. The original chromatic transitions, the vibrant colors of the robes, and the emotional depth I had imagined for him were once again visible.

Today, Daniele is back there, focused, suspended between reading and writing. He is trying to understand the future. And, ultimately, he continues to do so for us too.
