In occasione delle festività natalizie, la Natività dipinta da Lorenzo Lotto nel 1525 arriva al Museo Diocesano di Milano, direttamente dalla Pinacoteca di Siena.

L’opera ha un’insolita iconografia. In primo piano infatti Lotto dipinse l’anziana levatrice, mai citata dai Vangeli canonici ma tirata in ballo da quelli apocrifi.

Un pittore unico non solo nella storia dell’arte italiana, ma europea, genio rivelatore, senza precedenti, della propria anima, non staccato dai suoi personaggi ma vivo e in essi presente”.

Così scriveva nel 1953 Pietro Zampetti di Lorenzo Lotto

Quella dipinta da Lotto è una scena familiare intima, all’interno della quale riesce a sperimentare gli effetti della luce provenienti da due fonti differenti. Il Bambino irradia luce divina che si riflette sui volti e le vesti dei personaggi che si muovono sulla scena mentre sullo sfondo, la luce del focolare, riesce a far intravedere un’altra figura femminile.

L’alone generato dal Bambino si diffonde su visi e sugli abiti dei personaggi, per poi riflettersi anche sugli oggetti sparsi attorno a loro. In secondo piano, la luce del focolare rivela un’altra figura femminile.

Vi faccio osservare un dettaglio a mio avviso straordinario. Guardate l’atteggiamento del Bambino che sta per essere lavato. Con un gesto tipico degli infanti, si ritira dall’acqua che probabilmente sente troppo fredda o che gli fa paura.

L’opera abitualmente custodita alla Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena sarà dunque la prossima protagonista dell’edizione 2025 di ‘Un Capolavoro per Milano’.

Lo straordinario dipinto di Lorenzo Lotto è già visibile presso il Museo Diocesano di Milano e rimarrà esposto al pubblico fino al 1° febbraio 2026.

Lotto’s Nativity with the Midwife in Milan for Christmas

For the Christmas holidays, the Nativity painted by Lorenzo Lotto in 1525 arrives at the Diocesan Museum of Milan, directly from the Pinacoteca di Siena.

Let me point out a detail that I find extraordinary. Look at the attitude of the Child who is about to be washed. With a gesture typical of infants, he withdraws from the water, which he probably feels is too cold or frightens him.

This work is usually kept at the Pinacoteca The Siena National Gallery will therefore be the next protagonist of the 2025 edition of “A Masterpiece for Milan.”

Lorenzo Lotto’s extraordinary painting is already on display at the Diocesan Museum of Milan and will remain on public display until February 1, 2026.
