Dicono fossi spilorcio ma poco conoscono la vita mia. Ripetono quello che sentono dire, che si vocifera senza fondamento ma non si premurano nemmeno di verificare se tal cosa sia vera oppure no.

Avevo il desiderio di offrire sostegno caritatevole a cause meritevoli in quel di Firenze. Era quello che mi sentivo di fare ed era ciò che gli aristocratici fiorentini avevano la consuetudine di compiere. Non ero un aristocratico, sia chiaro, ma tendere la mano ai più bisognosi mi pareva doveroso da parte mia che, nel corso della vita, avevo avuto modo di guadagnare assai.

Di tante elargizioni di denaro che feci non si conoscono i destinatari ma alcune di esse le destinai per fare la dote a giovani donne. In una lettera al mio amatissimo nipote Lionardo scrissi che dispensavo tali denari ‘Perché sono vecchio, come sai, vorrei fare qualcosa a Firenze per il benessere dell’anima mia, cioè fare elemosina, poiché non c’è altro che si possa fare, che io sappia’.

Durante quella specifica occasione versai 300 scudi, ovvero ben sei volte di quanto m’ero proposto di inviare nel 1549.

Per darvi un’idea di quanti soldi potessero essere, vi dico che al tempo un funzionario pubblico guadagnava 50 scudi all’anno e il mio caro amico Giorgio Vasari che poteva contare su un generoso stipendio elargito dal duca Cosimo I de’ Medici, ne guadagnava 300 all’anno, nel 1554.

Non ero solito raccontare le mie elemosine ai quattro venti e se non fosse stato per il Vasari che volle mettere nero su bianco questa mia consuetudine per sottolineare il fatto che non fossi avaro, come anche ai miei tempi si diceva, non ne sapreste niente.

Scrisse ebbe modo di scrivere: “soccorreva molti poveri … e segretamente maritava un buon numero di ragazze, e arricchiva coloro che lo servivano”.
