Il dipinto del giorno del quale voglio parlarvi oggi è la Notte di Mezza Estate, realizzato del preraffaellita inglese Edward Robert Hughes nel 1908. Un’opera tanto poetica quanto raffinata che, con le sue atmosfere incantate, rievoca la celeberrima commedia di Shakespeare scritta nel 1595: ‘Sogno di una notte di mezz estate’.

Nel dipinto Hugues intreccia il mondo fantastico a quello terreno, creando un’atmosfera irreale ma suggestiva.

Al centro della scena compare una fanciulla abbigliata con una veste leggera che tiene sollevata con le mano all’altezza delle ginocchia. Curva la schiena portando il busto in avanti per meglio osservare le creature incantate che si muovono ai suoi piedi, rischiarate da lucine e fiaccole.

Sono fate con ali di farfalla sulla schiena e folletti che danzano gioiosi. Sembra che vogliano celebrare il solstizio d’estate assieme alla giovane e al bosco che pare muoversi tutt’attorno.

La donna come spesso accade nelle opere preraffaellite, ha capelli ricci e rossi. Porta sul capo una coroncina di fiori e tiene sotto il braccio il flauto che forse le è servito per attrarre le magiche creature.

Il bosco che si intravede sullo sfondo è rischiarato dalla luna.

L’opera ‘Notte di Mezza Estate’ venne dipinta da Hughes in un momento terribile per l’umanità eppure sembra essere così eterea e serena. Per darvi un’idea, la tensione in Europa era alle stelle e sarebbe poi degenerata nella Prima Guerra Mondiale.

Il dipinto appartiene a una collezione privata.

The painting of the day I want to talk about today is Midsummer Night, created by the English Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Robert Hughes in 1908. A work as poetic as it is refined, its enchanting atmosphere evokes Shakespeare’s famous comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” written in 1595.

In the painting, Hughes intertwines the world of fantasy with the world of the earth, creating an unreal yet evocative atmosphere.

At the center of the scene is a young girl dressed in a light dress, which she holds up with her hands to her knees. She bends her back, leaning forward to better observe the enchanted creatures moving at her feet, illuminated by fairy lights and torches.

They are fairies with butterfly wings on their backs and elves dancing joyfully. It seems they want to celebrate the summer solstice together with the young woman and the forest that seems to be moving all around.

The woman, as often happens in Pre-Raphaelite works, has curly red hair. She wears a crown of flowers on her head and holds the flute under her arm, which perhaps served to attract the magical creatures.

The forest visible in the background is illuminated by the moon.

The work “Midsummer Night” was painted by Hughes at a terrible time for humanity, yet it seems so ethereal and serene. To give you an idea, tension in Europe was at its highest, and would later escalate into World War I.

The painting is part of a private collection.
