Nella parte più alta del Giudizio Universale, nelle due lunette in cui un tempo avevo affrescato con gli Antenati di Cristo, oggi potete osservare gli angeli apteri che portano i simboli della Passione di Cristo.

Nella lunetta di sinistra gli angeli senza ali sono impegnati a sorreggere il peso della Croce. Come scrisse il mio caro amico Giorgio Vasari, “con diverse e varie attitudini molto difficilmente condotte a fine nella facilità loro”.

Osservate con attenzione l’angelo che, a differenza degli altri semi-nudi, è completamente abbigliato con una lunga tunica verde. Assume un’attitudine differente rispetto agli angeli attigui e, più che sorreggere la Croce, sembra volercisi aggrappare con tutta la forza e guarda lo spettatore con un’aria smarrita.

Che sia la speranza di verde vestita che cerca appiglio nella fede? Molto probabile.

Alle sue spalle un altro angelo indica i beati verso il basso mentre un altro sembra volergli rispondere che la salvezza sta nella Croce.

Nel secondo gruppo della medesima lunetta una figura sostiene con tutte e due le mani la corona di spine mentre dirige lo sguardo verso il gruppo della Croce.

I suoi compagni invece mirano alla parte opposta, agli angeli apteri posizionati nella lunetta di destra.

Sapete, per portare a compimento la lunetta di sinistra impiegai 33 giornate di lavoro. La sola braga aggiunta successivamente come panno censorio di questa scena è quella che copre il pube dell’angelo centrale che sostiene la Croce.

Sia chiaro, non è una braga di Daniele da Volterra ma è una delle successive, apposte in un secondo momento e non rimossa durante l’ultimo restauro eseguito sull’opera.

The Last Judgement and the angel clinging to the Cross

In the highest part of the Last Judgement, in the two lunettes where I once frescoed the Ancestors of Christ, today you can observe the wingless angels carrying the symbols of the Passion of Christ.

In the left lunette the wingless angels are busy supporting the weight of the Cross. As my dear friend Giorgio Vasari wrote, “with different and various attitudes very difficult to bring to an end in their ease”.

Observe carefully the angel who, unlike the other semi-nudes, is completely dressed in a long green tunic. He assumes a different attitude compared to the adjacent angels and, rather than supporting the Cross, he seems to want to cling to it with all his strength and looks at the viewer with a lost expression.

Could it be the green-clad hope that seeks support in faith? Very likely.

Behind him, another angel points downwards at the blessed while another seems to want to answer that salvation lies in the Cross.

In the second group of the same lunette, a figure holds the crown of thorns with both hands while directing his gaze towards the group of the Cross.

His companions, on the other hand, aim at the opposite side, at the apteral angels positioned in the right lunette.

You know, it took me 33 days of work to complete the left lunette. The only pants added later as a censor cloth for this scene is the one that covers the pubis of the central angel holding the Cross.

Let me be clear, it is not a pants by Daniele da Volterra but one of the subsequent ones, added at a later time and not removed during the last restoration carried out on the work.
