Era il 1488 quando alcuni gentiluomini arrivarono a Firenze da Roma. Vennero a prendere Maddalena de’ Medici, la giovane figlia di Lorenzo il Magnifico, per condurla nella città eterna come promessa sposa di Franceschetto Cybo.

Come vi ho narrato più volte, nel Palazzo Mediceo di Via Larga tra filosofi, matematici e poeti si disquisiva su questioni importanti e i confronti erano pane quotidiano. Accadde così che la delegazione romana si mise a discutere con le presenza fiorentine a palazzo in merito al primato dell’arte.

Era Firenze o Roma la città con gli artisti che sarebbero passati alla storia? Un tema complicato da affrontare perché entrambe le città potevano vantare nomi illustri. A difesa del primato fiorentino sull’arte si schierò il filosofo e poeta Girolamo Beniveni.

Stando a quanto riportato in una biografia dello stesso Benivieni, a un certo punto si alzò in piedi con vigore, per sostenere la sua tesi disse “Et finalmente per raccorre l’excellenza di queste Arti, ha generato Firenze tale, quale io forse ed alcuni altri conosco, che sarà atto a vincere di maestrìa et di fama molti e molti accozzati insieme, ma essendo ancora giovanetto non si spiega distesamente il suo valore, io ci conosco bene semi tali che Roma stessa, un giorno, ne lo confesserà“.

Il biografo prosegue la stesura del testo aggiungendo la spiegazioni a tale profezia “Intendendo del divino Buonarrroti di cui il tempo le virtù scopersono che non s’era Girolamo punto abbagliato, che restarono per alcuni saggi capaci quelli signori avanti che di Firenze si partissero, onde essi molto della ragione di Girolamo s’appagarono”.

C’è da dire che nel 1488 ancora non ero entrato a far parte della ristretta cerchia di ragazzi che studiava presso il Giardino di San Marco. Lorenzo il Magnifico aveva creato quella fucina di talenti per mettere a disposizione dei più talentuosi una sorta di accademia d’arte ante litetram.

Come aveva fatto dunque il Beniveni a sapere che, appena tredicenne, sarei divenuto un grande artista? Non è da escludere avesse avuto modo di vedermi al lavoro nella bottega dal Ghirlandaio, intuendo le mie doti.

Fatto sta che quella profezia superò di gran lunga le aspettative solo qualche anno più tardi.

According to what is reported in a biography of Benivieni himself, at a certain point he stood up with vigor, to support his thesis he said “And finally to gather the excellence of these Arts, he has created Florence such as I perhaps and some others know, which will be able to surpass in mastery and fame many and many gathered together, but since he is still young his value is not explained in detail, I know well seeds such that Rome itself, one day, will confess it to him”.

The biographer continues the drafting of the text by adding the explanations to this prophecy “Understanding of the divine Buonarroti whose virtues time discovered that Girolamo had not dazzled at all, that those lords remained for some capable essays before they left Florence, whereby they were very satisfied with the reason of Girolamo”.

It must be said that in 1488 I had not yet become part of the small circle of boys who studied at the Garden of San Marco that Lorenzo the Magnificent had created to make available to the most talented a sort of art academy ante literarum.

So how did Beniveni know that, at just thirteen years old, I would become a great artist? It cannot be ruled out that he had had the opportunity to see me at work in the Ghirlandaio workshop, intuiting my talents.

The fact is that that prophecy far exceeded expectations only a few years later.
