Il disegno che vi propongo lo realizzai a sanguigna su un foglio di ridotte dimensioni. Fa parte del gruppo delle cosiddette ‘Teste Divine’, disegni che realizzai in momenti diversi durante il corso della vita.

Fu il Vasari a definire così per la prima volta un ristretto gruppo di soli tre disegni che avevo donato a “Gherardo Perini gentiluomo fiorentino suo amicissimo, in tre carte alcune teste di matita nera divine le quali sono dopo la morte di lui venute in mano dello illustrissimo don Francesco principe di Fiorenza che le tiene per gioie come le sono”.

Le caratteristiche della Testa Divina

Non incorrete nell’errore di tentare di capire a chi potesse appartenere quell’espressione malinconica. Si tratta infatti di un ritratto molto idealizzato.

Se osservate bene questa figura girata di spalle che volge la testa quasi di profilo, vi renderete conto che è una donna sia per la veste appena accennata che indossa che per il delicato orecchino che pende dal lobo destro.

Come accennato prima, la giovane ha un atteggiamento malinconico, con quegli occhi rivolti verso il basso. Osservate quanta attenzione feci ai dettagli come l’orecchio ben evidente in primo piano.

Come mai questo disegno si trova a Oxford?

La Testa Divina in questione è una delle più note al grande pubblico, appartenente alla collezione dell’Ashmoleann Museum di Oxford. Se vi chiedete come mai si trovi nelle pertinenze di un museo non italiano, il mistero è presto risolto.

Quando il mio pronipote Michelangelo Buonarroti il giovane decise di allestire il museo di Casa Buonarroti per rendermi omaggio, il granduca Cosimo II gli restituì oltre alla Madonna della Scala diversi disegni miei di cui s’era appropriato Cosimo I.

Sempre in quegli anni, il mio pronipote cercò di recuperare la maggior parte di disegni e carte autografe che circolavano sul mercato romano comprandoli a caro prezzo.

I disegni vennero raccolti in volumi ma i più belli, proprio come questa Testa Ideale, furono incorniciati e esposti in modo permanente a parete, per altro mettendo a rischio la loro conservazione per le future generazioni.

In quel frangente la collezione di disegni miei di Casa Buonarroti era la più grande e importante del mondo.

Purtroppo gli sforzi di Michelangelo Buonarroti il giovane vennero vanificati dal rivoluzionario Filippo Buonarroti alla fine del Settecento. Esule in Corsica, effettuò la vendita di un cospicuo nucleo di disegni al collezionista francese Jean Baptiste Wicar.

Nel grande lotto era compresa proprio questa Testa Ideale che avevo tracciato secoli prima a sanguigna su un piccolo foglio di carta che misura solo 20,5 centimetri in altezza e 16,5 in larghezza.

Casa Buonarroti subì poi un’altra importante vendita di disegni nell’ottobre del 1858 da parte del cavaliere Michelangelo Buonarroti al British Museum.

Sebbene il museo fiorentino ancora possieda molti disegni, come vedete purtroppo ne perse tanti altri nel corso dei secoli a causa dei miei eredi che non si fecero troppi scrupoli nel venderli al miglior offerente.

L’anno di esecuzione

Sebbene i critici siano tutti d’accordo sull’autografia di questo bellissimo volto con tanto di bizzarro copricapo, non tutti concordano sulla data di esecuzione.

Data la sua forte somiglianza ad alcune figure che si trovano nelle lunette e a qualche Sibilla affrescata nella volta Sistina, alcuni propendono a collocarlo fra il 1508 e il 1511.

Il Berenson nella sua seconda edizione del suo libro sui miei disegni lo posticipa a quasi dieci anni dopo, datandolo nel 1538.

Charles del Tolnay invece fece un’altra considerazione importante: è ipotizzabile pensare che il disegno della Testa Divina segua quelli di teste femminili realizzati per Gherardo Perini e lo data tra il 1525 e il 1530.

The Divine Head: a 20-centimeter masterpiece

The drawing I am proposing to you is part of the group of the so-called ‘Divine Heads’, rich heads created by me at different times in my artistic production.

It was Vasari who first defined in this way a small group of just three drawings that I had donated to “Gherardo Perini, a Florentine gentleman and his very close friend, in three sheets of some divine black pencil heads which, after his death, came into the hands of the most illustrious Don Francesco, Prince of Florence, who keeps them as jewels as they are”.

The characteristics of the Divine Head

Do not make the mistake of trying to understand who that melancholy expression could belong to. It is in fact a very idealized portrait.

If you look carefully at this figure turned from behind and turning her head almost in profile, you will realize that it is a woman both because of the barely visible dress she is wearing and the delicate earring hanging from her right earlobe.

As mentioned before, the young woman has a melancholic attitude, with those eyes turned downwards. Notice how finely detailed I drew the ear clearly visible in the foreground.

Why is this drawing in Oxford?

The Divine Head in question is one of the best known to the general public, belonging to the collection of the Ashmoleann Museum in Oxford. If you are wondering why it is in the possession of a non-Italian museum, the mystery is quickly solved.

When my great-grandson Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger decided to set up the Casa Buonarroti museum to pay homage to me, Grand Duke Cosimo II returned to him, in addition to the Madonna della Scala, several of my drawings that Cosimo I had appropriated.

Also in those years, my great-grandson tried to recover most of the drawings and autographed papers that were circulating on the Roman market by buying them at a high price.

The drawings were collected in volumes but the most beautiful ones, just like this Ideal Head, were framed and permanently displayed on the wall, also putting their preservation for future generations at risk.

At that time the collection of my drawings at Casa Buonarroti was the largest and most important in the world.

Unfortunately, the efforts of Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger were thwarted by the revolutionary Filippo Buonarroti at the end of the eighteenth century. Exiled in Corsica, he sold a large group of drawings to the French collector Jean Baptiste Wicar.

The large lot included this Ideal Head that I had drawn centuries before in red chalk on a small sheet of paper measuring only 20.5 centimeters in height and 16.5 in width.

Casa Buonarroti then underwent another important sale of drawings in October 1858 by the knight Michelangelo Buonarroti to the British Museum.

Although the Florentine museum still owns many drawings, as you can see, it unfortunately lost many others over the centuries due to my heirs who had no qualms about selling them to the highest bidder.

The year of execution

Although critics all agree on the autograph of this beautiful face with its bizarre headdress, not all agree on the date of execution.

Given its strong resemblance to some figures found in the lunettes and to some Sibyls frescoed in the Sistine vault, some are inclined to date it between 1508 and 1511.

Berenson in his second edition of his book on my drawings postpones it to almost ten years later, dating it to 1538.

Charles del Tolnay instead made another important consideration: it is conceivable to think that the drawing of the Divine Head follows those of female heads made for Gherardo Perini and dates it between 1525 and 1530.
