In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, avvenuta il 6 marzo 1475, vi propongo la scultura che mi ritrae come uomo illustre, realizzata nel 1842 da Emilio Santarelli.

Abbigliato con una ricca veste damascata e con un mantello di velluto pesante che arriva fino alle caviglie, lo scultore fiorentino volle immaginarmi così. A dirla tutta non ero solito sfoggiare vesti così ricercate ma immagino che Santarelli abbia voluto rendermi omaggio mettendomi nei panni di un uomo assai più ricercato nel vestire rispetto a com’ero davvero.

Ho la barba biforcuta come abitualmente portavo e guardo verso il basso con un fare tra il pensieroso e il malinconico.

Mentre porto la mano destra all’altezza dei fianchi, posiziono l’altra al centro del petto.

La scultura che mi ritrae si trova in una delle nicchie centrali del Loggiato degli Uffizi. Sapete, già al tempo della costruzione di quel grande complesso, esisteva un progetto per la decorazione del loggiato con lo scopo di farlo divenire una sorta di nuovo Foro di Augusto.

Per il volere di Cosimo I, le 28 nicchie avrebbero dovuto essere decorate con altrettanti “fiorentini che fussero stati chiari e illustri nelle armi, nelle lettere e nei governi civili”. A causa di varie vicissitudini quel progetto non andò in porto fino a quando, nell’Ottocento, non venne rimesso al centro della scena.

Mancavano però i soldi per poter decorare le nicchie con ritratti di uomini illustri così venne aperta una vera e propria sottoscrizione pubblica. Per trovare i fondi necessari vennero organizzati numerosi eventi aperti a tutti, tra i quali anche le tombolate.

Alla fine si raccolsero soldi a sufficienza per dare il via al progetto decorativo e le sculture furono affidate agli artisti più in vista che erano a Firenze in quel periodo.

Nel settembre del 1840 Santarelli aveva già realizzato il modello in gesso per trasporlo poi in scultura e aprì le porte del suo studio per mostrarlo a chi desiderasse vederlo.

Sebbene la scultura fosse già ultimata nel 1842, fu inaugurata all’interno della nona nicchia del loggiato solo tre anni dopo, nel 1845.

Michelangelo 550: me as an illustrious man sculpted by Emilio Santarelli

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, which took place on March 6, 1475, I propose to you the sculpture that portrays me as an illustrious man, created in 1842 by Emilio Santarelli.

Dressed in a rich damask robe and with a heavy velvet cloak that reaches to the ankles, the Florentine sculptor wanted to imagine me like this. To tell the truth, I was not used to showing off such refined clothes but I imagine that Santarelli wanted to pay homage to me by putting me in the shoes of a man much more refined in dressing than I really was.

I have a forked beard as I usually wore and I look downwards with an attitude between thoughtful and melancholic.

While I bring my right hand to the height of my hips, I place the other in the center of my chest.

The sculpture that portrays me is located in one of the central niches of the Uffizi Loggia. You know, already at the time of the construction of that large complex, there was a project for the decoration of the loggia with the aim of making it a sort of new Forum of Augustus.

According to the will of Cosimo I, the 28 niches were to be decorated with the same number of “Florentines who had been famous and illustrious in arms, letters and civil governments”. Due to various vicissitudes that project did not come to fruition until, in the nineteenth century, it was put back at the center of the scene.

However, there was no money to decorate the niches with portraits of illustrious men so a real public subscription was opened. To find the necessary funds, numerous events open to all were organized, including tombola games.

In the end, enough money was raised to start the decorative project and the sculptures were entrusted to the most prominent artists who were in Florence at that time.
